It's not hard to get AI beams... just use a turreted weapon. But you do need to use the "bomber" flag, and probably a fire-beam SEXP for the player. Plus a fixed fire beam works better.

And nobody would have any fun flying the Nial because they couldn't shoot. Not properly at any rate (yes I know there is ways of doing it....but not worth it).
This has been argued to death. We've improved the effect a bit for Release 2, but it remains largely the same.

(just to show it can be done)
Dunno.... still think you should consider it for hostile ships.
It's your mod, though.

Showing a picture of it is one thing, getting it to work in the game is another.

I can barely see it, but its definately not anything like a Nial which is a full fledged fighter.
The Vorlon fighter which isn't going to be player flyable and which is kind of bizzar anyways will have a beam cannon with which to attack enemy capital ships with and a pulse cannon to shoot at fighters with and then the Drakh Raider will also have a beam and pulse. The Drakh will also have a smaller version of the Raider that we just call the Fighter without the beam.

It is not a question that we couldn't produce fighter beams in the game, that's been done for years already. The point is that all the applications of fighter beams to date are more or less simple toys that take considerable amount of tweaking from both table/visual and mission dev side compared to the outcome. And we simply don't want to fall into the pit of further artificial solutions, we have to make them enough already.
