Yup...without something getting invented like shields, pretty much a pebble can rip right through the thickest armor and out the other side.
JMS said something about having some sort of integrity web around ships to help protect themselves against beams and impacts. Not well, but a bit.

Very powerful (by modern standards) but very weak (by B5/ST standards) electromagnetic fields have already been used in science as weak kinds of forcefields. They basically work along the lines of EM repulsion and should work as more powerful versions if more powerful emitters can be developed and more effective EM shielding can be produced to protect people inside this "shield". The technology works in principle but is a long, long way (hundreds of years) off being viable as a combat technology.

well those movie where plain stupid movies Armagedon ..
I don't know if u know the efects of a Thermonuclear device..now depending of the yield
(http://www.fas.org/nuke/guide/index.html)
after detonation it will result in complete Vaporisation of everithing at ground 0..now that range from hundered meters to a mile size area...
due tio the size of weapon that apear there ..it was something like a tac Nuke..the most powerfull was a 100Mt bomb..Russians never had courage to test it a full yeild so it was only 65 MT after ones and 50MT after others(http://www.fas.org/nuke/hew/Russia/Sovwarhead.html)..so one of this in space will create real havoc..not to mention the EMP pulse. So that is all about NUKES POWER

Armageddon was still relatively correct. Fire a nuke at a large asteroid and its still going to keep coming.
Although, I figure, if you can hit it with one warhead, why not a thousand warheads.

I suggest your read this first: http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/editorials/08-05-98.shtml
And all of the rest of you who think big missions are always the way to go.

Everybody needs to get one big battle out of their system before they will be satisfied. In addition, the beginner Fred 2 users tend to not be particularly au fait with the sexps required to make decent missions with plenty of events occuring. The big battle allows the beginner to learn the basics and to experiment with mission balance before ruining any dreams of great missions with poor mission creation skills.

My first truly huge mission I created only a couple months ago. It makes the Battle of the Line mission I made for TBP look small...but the trick is not to loose the detail and the important role of the player. This was also harder because of the Minbari fleet being so powerful...so I won't discount myself too much there.
My very first mission was very basic. It was a Fenris VS a Cain with two wings of fighters on each side. I experimented with objectives (disable, disarm, destroy). I played with backgrounds (at the time, it was color, and pattern - Descent: FreeSpace) and tried the different music sets. That was my first mission

First missions....ahhh, the fond memories. My first Battle of Endor was a skirmish between about twelve caps including Hecates, Orions, and plenty of corvettes, cruisers and fighters. Ohhh, the humanity.

My first 'mission' was me being bored and seeing if seven Deimos corvettes could blast a Ravana to pieces.
My first 'real' mission was never, since I didn't get into FRED2 that much

Haa the first mission, oh those times... Hah! Then I couldn't do anything(sometimes feels like I couldn't do anything, even now). My first mission was clash of Fernis, just few fighters and lots of Fernis (this happened in FS1). Sometimes it feels that it was only mission what I never tired to play (from my own missions, of course).
