WinXP takes up about 1 GB.
Well, I think it's enough if I say that I won't go back to W98 or W2k even if someone is pointing his Magnum .45 on my right temple.

make a start up disk (save all the **** u need on removabe disks)

insert the start up disk and reboot your PC with it in

then there is a menu from the menu choose start PC with CD rom support then let it do the **** it does

so then the commands:

Can you install XP over Windows ME/98 - i.e. As an upgrade, without having to reformat?

Yes you can but it's recommended to reformat, you can do this in XP install. So, no need to do it before, reformatting before installing OS can be little tricky for person who don't know how to use dos.

Reformat is always better choice when installing new OS, you can get rid of all **** lying on you HD, of course better take documents to a disk or on other partition.

Just a question really, I would normally reformat before upgrading my OS, and yes I have over 12 years of DOS experience (oh the good old days of configuring autoexec.bat and config.sys to try to get that extra 1KB of conventional memory needed to run your new game )

Windows has detected OS stability for 5 hours please wait while Windows examins the cause of this... If the reason for the stability isnt detected Windows will by default activate a fatal error exception

I remember that. WC: Privateer would just not work until three hours later when I finally got that extra KB of extended memory

Does Home Edition let you run in NTFS?

Aaaaah nostalgy, I did that for wing commander 2 3 &4
strike commander, x-wing,Tornado, master of orion, falcon 3.0 , those were the times!!! people looked up to PC's to make dreams come true... fight those fights of star wars, beat aliens in space, fly F-16, something we spent wears imagining in our minds, and then 286 and 386 came along, it was a hapiness, and most game editors actualy had imagination...

Win Me stinks... when I install Visual Studio on it -> crashes
When Visual Studio is installed -> at some point, explorer always crashes at start up. Until I remove Visual Studio from my computer.
when I surf in internet -> random lockups
I have many many reasons to switch my os to XP...
Does MS Visual Studio 6.0 work without problems in Win XP

Hmm... looks like Edwin really doesn't know much about computers if he can't format and reinstall OS on his own, or use dos.

No offence meant Edwin, but perhaps it is about time to learn those things.

Privateer is pure dos game, it won't run under command prompt.
You can make a shortcut which boots automatically to dos when you click the shortcut, I can't remember exact settings because I haven't used W9x based OS in ages.

I've been running XP (whistler beta) for nine months. I've had friend who have been running it for two years. It's definatly the best OS out there. I put the actual sale version (as opposed to whistler) on my new computer last week and I have to say I like Whistler better. Not as flashy but it just has a better feel to it. Seems more solid to, odd for a beta. Oh well, when you boil it down there's really no difference.

I remember that.. reminds me of trying to tweak a model until finally its under the poly limit, like I was doing with the new nial till I realised that it was just a model error giving me loads of extra polys.

I get lucky.. my computer behaves.. i rarely have to reformat anymore.. but that's probably because i've fixed so many windows systems the knowledge of what causes the problems is so deeply ingrained that i subconsciously avoid them
