To me, the backgrounds are almost as important as the story. The background gives a sense of mood....a sense of place, it gives the player something to identify with. Its why its important. It takes me at the most 5 minutes to setup a basic background which I tweak during development process.
Even if you place 6 red nebulas with a white sun and a red or orange ambient color, you've set the mood for your mission already.
