Question a bunch of beams

What do you think about this?

http://www.strategyplanet.com/hwshots/shots/shota259.jpg

Nononono I don't mean the Sharlins but look at those beams... Those look way better than the original TBP Sharlin beams (the original ones looking too much like a one-color-used-only) IMHO.

And here nice looking Omega beams:

There were some talks about the color of the warlock's main beams and someone suggested orangish... well what about this? Looks kinda good to me:

Comments? TBP Staff?

Um....I don't notice much difference in the Sharlins beams.
The Omega beams look very nice. I love it.
I can't say much about the Warlocks beams. I would have to see how does it look in the game. More than just one picture.

Those actually runs?

I remember the actual Homeworld models to be really low
detailed. Those looked a bit too detailed to me. Besides,
50 Omegas flying in a sphere?.... I don't like that image.
I always picture Omegas to be the same as the carriers
in Homeworld.

However, even their sharlin looks less detailed, I do like
the fact that from the front, they look ... "fatter" than the
TBP's sharlin, which is how I remembered in the show.
The TBP sharlins looks way too thin from the front.......

Question

Opinions anyone?

The Sharlin beams in that pic have the outer, more transparent part and the inner bright green part (far less transparent). I know the TBP Sharlin beams DO have that effect also but it could be stronger so also when viewed from greater distances you could see it. It's the same thing with the Omega beams; plain red doesn't look all that nice. There should be some "texture" in it.

That's because those beams are based on the beam look from the actual series itself. We have 2 families of Minbari beams, Neutron and Fusion. Neutron is the one that follows "In the Beginning", Fusion follow the series and "And the Sky Full of Stars". Currently only Neutrons has sufficient graphics while Fusions aren't finished, thus in the demo release Fusions uses the same graphics as Neutrons.

Which beam weapon looks look better, that's something that everybody has an own opinion...I like more the looks of the show like you, some people like ItB's. But nevertheless, don't compare our demo release beams to those ones. They aren't even supposed to look the same.

I always find it funny watching sci-fi debates about how lasers ought to look because IRL you wouldn't see a thing unless you were directly in line with the laser, saw the resulting damage or were firing it through a gas cloud.

Of course shows can't do this because space combat scenes would look stupid, just seeing things randomly blow up in silence!!!

I'm not criticising these discussions because they are relevant to the game/show, it just makes me laugh

Those beams we made are direct from ITB screen captures. So they are pretty much as close to the real show stuff as we can possibly get.

Thats because FS2 beams are pitifully small in bitmap size and the bitmap is stretched across a huge repeating plane.

Up the bitmap size and you can get more detail into your beams. At this point, there is no need for that with the Minbari beams, but when we go further into the depths of detail, we can look at that.

Again, its in FS2, its not like were breaking new ground here.
