Well. I think dealing with 3d models is the hardest thing. No matter if as a texturer or converter....
The reason : Sometimes it is unpleasant work , sometimes it doesn't work as expected , and sometimes you have to concentrate badly on not clicking the wrong buttons.
However , if you got used to it EVERYTHING is fun.
Personally, I am working on the EA script coz otherwise White and tomcat would force me to texture again.

What would be cool is if you made a ship exactly like a real ship would be. Then you could (if it were a capital-ship) blow off a hatch, fly in, and blow the ship apart from the inside. It would olso be cool because you could fly between the decks. and hollow out the ship! Just make the outer hatch a subsystem that can be blows away, Mahe the hull a whole bunch of cubes glude together to form a gigantic ollow cube(just for starters) and make the decks low-hitpoint subsystems that are composed of giant slabs of rectangle.
This idea came to me when in a dream i flew my Erinyes into the open hatch of a ship and got lost inside.

Anyone can be a texturer , one only needs 3 things:
1) avaiable time
2) good self teaching talents (not the same as learn)
3) Truespace 5 for those who are begginners.
Pick up one model and covert it back to COB format using kazans tools (preferrable an EA ship like the olympus) get its textures from the FS2 directories and see how it was textured.
Mimic the procedure by reseting all faces to blank and then reaply the textures (youll need skullars tutorial, read the most important pages), that will be a good exercise, if you can rearrange and make textures by your own would be even better.
Contrary to many modelers have sayd texturing can be quite satisfying, getting a "naked" model and during texturing job woull see how you can make it quite handsome,a work of art, is very satisfying. After that your 2 steps away to have it in the game.
I used to assemble military planes model kitts, painting and decal'ing was the phase I liked the most.

Truespace 5 is a little bit pricey, especially for a beginner.
I have 3D Studio Max which isn't much use for freespace
modding, but I don't want to fork out for another program.

But you do need a copy of TS.

but i'd like to point out theres a difference between a texturer and a good texturer
to become a good texturer you need
a good 3d mind to think about uv space
knowledge and experience with a decent 2d art package
how to texture as effciently as possible

Not as part of the MOD. Hell i could make the ship and someone else could convert it and everything.

no. I mean.. if you didn't see it in FS2 it isn't possible. What you're proposing Edwin is, frankly, just silly.

True, but not with the FS2 engine. Sorry. Maybe when a new and exciting space-sim game comes out with a super-tricked-out-engine, that'll happen.
The problem with that is the space-sim (and even aviation-sim) market is really hardcore; that means few (if any) casual gamers buy them, making it difficult to sell the idea to a publisher, because profit will be small or nonexistant ...

I downloaded the ts4 trial a while back, but I couldn't save anything. How does the ts5 tria work fully? Up untill today when it expired I was using the ts2 trial to get ships into fs2. I am downloading what you said now, but I don't expect it to work.
If it doesn't thats the end of my little venture into fs2 modding.

You'll soon find out TS5 is way more intuitive to texture.
When i got my trial it saved models, if it doesnt now, then its a different trial version, I got mine from the site I posted above.
Caligari is known to make deadlines for certain downloads, then it provides downgraded versions.

I'll offer my skills as a modeler, but someone else needs to texture.

we've become set in our ways really and the team is nicely setup as it is now, to be honest unless your very good (and by that i mean the team thinks your very good) modellers and texturers wont be accepted. mission designers can make missions themselves, pled with ice to let them do some missions, but the compo is closed now so he will announce the new team members in a while i suppose. we have our sound effects guru, thats done, we have ppl who can do music etc, thats covered, we can always test a voice sample if your interested in voice acting, but you must be reliable for voice acting this the main point, be willing to possibly rerecord and of course have a decent voice/able to show emotion through your voice,
an area i would like to see officially covered is a "god of lightwave" position, someone with great knowledge of how to produce explosion effects, shockwave effects, possibly aid me in the creation of texture maps etc
i would also like to update the babylon projects nebua collection (just the generic set) neb_blue1 neb_red3 etc etc theyre good, but they could be a lot better in my opinion, so if someoen is interested in creating new nebula, contact me
and by this i mean nice realistic, detailed, primarily one colour nebulas rendered in lightwave or some other package
