Well, except EMP primaries..... those weren't in FS.

No...but they could be. The EMP effect is there....its not primary or secondary specific so therefore we can do it.

Just to piss you all off
I've played with a fighter with beam weapons.
It was kinda nifty to wipe out waves of fighters coming at you with the big green beams.
Granted I couldn't get it to work in multiplayer for ****, but it was there for single player.
I don't remember specifics other than that, it's been along time since I screwed with FS2.

The bombers have turrets on them... the beams are turret weapons(I think?) not primary weapons, so that works with a bit of tweaking.

Although it is rather irrelevant now, there indeed was a mod that came out on the FS moding archives that featured beam weaponry on player ships.
A while back I downloaded several (3-5) mods with my 56k
modem (It was painful, and those mods didn't really have
anything new). One of them did have a beam weapon on
a fighter. It's pretty stupid though, first it have no aspect,
that means you have to be dog fighting to hit someone with it.
second, even though I think one hit takes out about 50%
of a fighter's hull, it looks more like a kinetic weapon. What
good is beam if it works like laser? beams are supposed to
last a few seconds, and rip through multiple ships.
Last, and the most important.... Most of the time you don't
even see that frigging beam.... It's like you are hitting the
enemy fighters with Chinese Chi-Kong. I've only seen that
beam coming out of friendly ships once or twice.
So... that makes that beam pretty useless.

Basically the only way beam cannons could be mounted on fighters, drain energy reserves, and have a sustained firing/recharge time is if some gifted programmer got his hands on the source code...
...and that ain't gonna happen.
Sid.

Some time ago I downloaded the Vorlon fighter, and came upon with an idea. If you are not going to make it player flyable, why don't simply give it a turret in the front and fit it with a "real" beam weapon that is a type 4 beam, and fires continuously. I made it work, it's easy.

pera, thats the plan for the Vorlon fighter. But its not the plan for the Nial. Thats basically it.
Even with Type 4 beams, the AI needs a primary cannon to aim. For whatever reason.

Yep, I noticed that, otherwise it doesn't know how to aim at the enemy. But I made it with a "dummy"-weapon, that is invisible, has a really long recharge rate and does no damage.
