Tachyon was good, only problem was the linear storyline and unimaginative weapon effects and sound.
Starlancer was better, great ships and storyline. Was a little buggy though. IIRC it was written by the guys who created the Wing Commander series.
Its sequal Freelancer is due soonish and SHOULD be excellent
More of a trading game with a loose storyline, kinda like X-BTF
X-BTF is the closest you can get to a modern day elite. If you get it, make sure you get X-Tension too. Allows you to fly over twenty different ships including transports. Takes FOREVER to get into but its very absorbing once you start to accumulate money. No storyline in X-Tension, completely openended.

its a business cause you play a character that is a free agent
you get jobs off a bulliten board or something
its cool and its a great storyline too
you start at earth and do a few jobs and then you are framed or are in an unlucky position and the military think you killed lots of people
so you are banished to the outer rim where you have to start from scratch and then chose side between a large corporation evil business and a rebels its a great game cause you can go seperate ways and never look back
yeah well you get paid for each job you do and there are not only missions that involve completions of the game there is add ons which which make it a bit cooler
it isnt a game you can really do a mod for especially B5

Those games are all good.
Homeworld already has many good mods, including B5 mods.
I don't know any Starlancer mods, B5 mod team is still waiting for mission editor.
And I-War 2 is quite new game, I don't know either if it has any mods, but I am sure that there will be at least B5 mod someday.

well it's the now defunct and not going to be made ever B5 official game Into the Fire
And wildlife, it depends on what you're after. Of the 3, Starlancer is great fun and the best mindless space shooter, I war 2 is great fun and the best physics model space shooter, and Homeworld is fun, very rewarding, and the best real time strategy.
Of the three I'd buy I war 2. Because I already have Starlancer and Homeworld.

I never liked Tachyon. Didn't grab me. At all. And the graphics randomly looked either very good or very shoddy.
