Question Interplay gone under? In what ways will this determine the future of Freespace?

I was just wondering. I tried going to the interplay website the other day and noticed that they were offline. I tried again later that week and they were still offline. After some brief searching I found out that Interplay was unable to pay its rent or pay its payroll taxes (go here for more details.http://biz.yahoo.com/e/040427/iplye.ob10-k.html ) I was just wondering though, what does this say for the future of the Freespace universe? Might it be more likely now for Volition to reclaim the rights to publish a new vesion of Freespace with a different publisher? I don't know how that publishing works and I would like to hear other people's thoughts on the matter, what do you guys think? Or am I totally missing something?

Dangerous question to ask FS3 questions generally aren't appreciated by community since we've heard them so often.

The simple fact is that we've been speculating for a while about it. The possibilities you've mentioned previously have been discussed several times.

The general consus is that

-[V] would probably only do FS3 for consoles.

-The plotline would either be so spookily close to one of the third person campaigns that it would be redundant or would be so off the wall as to annoy the hell out of the community.

-There are quite a few people who would rather see no FS3 at all due to the huge likelyhood of it sucking donkey balls.

-If the price is right we'd rather buy the licence as a community so that we can mega-pimp the SCP and get lots of new people into the community.

Ok, thanks for your insight. I am relatively new to the Freespace community although I am a 3-4 year user of Ffreespace(1-2). At first I didn't realize that this was a frequently asked question until I did some looking into the past threads. By the way, I am very impressed with the progress the SCP people have made. Keep it up guys, it looks great!

I can tell you right now that that is not the case at all. Noone has made any campaign that is anything like what a theoretical FS3 campaign would be like.

And it would not be off-the-wall either. You'd be all like, "That makes perfect sense!"

Oh.. I've said too much!

PS. No I am not saying that V is working on FS3, so don't infer that.

Heh, yet another possibility. IF it ever happens, let's just hope its not like the first theory. Its fun to dream, isnt it? By the way would V tell us they are working on a new FS or would they wait until a few months before publishing to give any news about it?

They wouldn't announce it as soon as they start working on it, but they'd announce it well before it ships, too.

Didn't say I agreed with the general consus. Just what it was

It's possible that you're right but it's possible that some of the campaigns who are playing their cards close to their chests have already had similar ideas.

To be fair the plotline published for the Behind Enemy Lines campaign (which supposedly had a degree of officiality to it) was quite different from the other campaigns currently around.

I'm right. Just accept it.

Behind Enemy Lines had no degree of officiality to it. If there was, I was completely oblivious to it, and I highly doubt that could have happened.

The writer claimed he was working for [V] at one point.

Of course he could have been lying

Well to tell you the truth, it would be for someone to make a campaign on what really happened to Admiral "Aken H. Bocsh."

He lied, I think. I don't know any "Ascraeus" that worked at Volition.

He wasn't working for Volition...to my knowlege it was explained to me that he was attempting to get a job at Volition as a writer and to do that he wrote out a theoretical FreeSpace 3 story which, when he didn't get the job, got turned into a third party campaign.

It would be nice to get ahold of the head writer of FS2 and see if we can get him to say just waht the heck was going to happen in 3.

Heh, that would be kind of nice. But thankfully we have imaginations too.

Some of you maybe remember my post last year when I asked Interplay where the heck the rights to FS went to. They told me they wouldn´t own them anymore. So there´s still the question who owns them right now, or if this Interplay person was wrong, where are they going to now?

There's been a fair old bit of FS3 speculation regarding these interplay shenanigans lately, and the one thing I've noticed is that nobody seems to even know whether V even has a storyline in mind. I've heard everything from they know precisely what was supposed to happen next to they had no idea and were making stuff up as they went along in FS2. Nice to hear from (relatively close to) the horses mouth that they do, infact, know what was supposed to happen.

And someone put some tags on here...

Whoa, these are about 50 people using their jobs. That is no joke, especially not in the States. The company might be a bloody mess, but no-one deserves to go under like this.

well, i meant the company itself, not the people, i feel sorry for them.

But the company itself deserves to go under for not doing a FS3.
