Lighting
Hey all,
I might be alone in this opinion, but would it be possible in TBP to double-up on the main light in the game engine?
I've always felt that,as good as TBP looks the ships never look quite as ` bright ` as they maybe should ( you could throw this argument at Freespace1/2 as well ).
I'm not talking about `dayglow` bright, but just making the main light stronger.
What brought this on was I just looked at some recent FreeLancer pics, and thought to myself that it doesnt look as good as it maybe should.Looks quite good, but not 3 years worth of tech dev over TBP and FS2.Still a bit flat looking, which led me to think about the strength of the lighting.
Is this possible or would it have to be done in the main engine rather than FRED?

I don't know if it helps, but you can try to make a bigger sun.

Just put 2 suns in one mission, place them both in the same location with the same orientation.

Turn up the brightness...that usually works for me. We've intentionally gone dark on the ambient lighting because it looks a whole lot better.

Thanks for the replys guys.
Icefire:
I agree that space looks better with less ambient, but I meant the strength of the sun, which would help make the areas that are lit a bit more intense.Sometimes it looks a bit flat because there isn't enough contrast between light and dark.
I'll play about with FRED later and see what I can come up with ( never used it before! )

It may be a bit OT but the gamma controls in my copy of freesapce don't work. It really kind of sucks because all of the briefing animations are so dark that I can barely see them. Has anybody ever had this problem?
I'm running a GeForce 2 MX 400.

You'll need to use the nVidia drivers to modify the gamma correction, your right they don't work in game.
There is no main light source. The sun casts a glow on one side of the vessel. Our ambient lighting is a "negative" sun. Aside from that, its just a gamma value. As far as I know anyways, it may be something different in the code...

I have that problem on my dad's Gateway comp. I think it's just the monitor, but he won't let me screw with it because he likes it that way.
