ATI Radeon 7200?
Is this graphics card worth buying if working under limited budget?
My old 3D card exploded (GeForce DDR) and I have to find a new 3D card somewhere fast so should I buy Radeon 7200 or just NVidia GeForce 2 MX-400?
If possible, could you also point out some benchmarks (if there are any) and reviews.
I would be eternally grateful...
Thanks.

I recomend Winfast GeForce2 pro. Very good, very fast, and it costs (at least in estonia) not very much. In finland it should cost 1900 finnis marks, plus-minus 50.

Despite the fact that ATI is Canadian, I've always liked nVidia better. ATI's got some good products, but I think the GeForce line is better.
How did you explode your current GeForce?

DB, doesn't guarantine work?
Anyways, ATI's Radeon hardware has been always better than GeForce's. But has only recently begun to improve their drivers, currently they are good, but could be better.
Radeon 7200 is a good buy though, faster than MX cards.
But if you hate fussing with drivers and don't want to update drivers that much, perhaps GF is better choice then.

OK I have one question: Do any of the Radeons support 8-bit palletted textures? Thats the only thing that'll make me even remotely think of buying one over the equivalent nVidia card. Also it has to be less than $A300 (about $US150), I refuse to pay more than that for a video card no matter how good it is.

Hardware have the support for 8-bit palettized textures but ATI messed up the support in drivers, hopefully we will see it again someday.

Kazan's talking nonsense again...how nVidia makes crap "ICs" (integrated circuits, perhaps?) when they just set standards for manufacturers - and don't make the boards themselves - :sigh:
ATi's driver support is nothing compared to nVidia's. That's a fact.
Card-wise, the Radeon 8500 is too expensive - his budget is $150 - the cheapest I've ever seen an OEM Radeon (which is slower in core and memory speed than a retail radeon, so you get screwed there as well) is $203.
Hence, you'd have to get a 7500 if you went Radeon. A Radeon 7500 is not as good as the equivilant GeForce line.
For US $150, I'd reccomend a GF2 Ti 200; I know you can get one for $99 at pricewatch, but pay a bit more to get a good brand (Leadtek, Asus, something like that) and you'll get better quality parts (and better 2D to boot; if you run at really high resolutions pay attention to that. Remember, 2D on any GF card is determined by the manufacturer and not nVidia.)
newegg.com has Leadtek, Visiontek, and Gainward GF2s for under $150, so it'd be about $150 with shipping to your door. Just do a little research on their respective differences (which will be minor but may be noteworthy) and you're ready to go

LOL thats pretty easy did you touch th heat sink shortly after shut down? ITS HOT!!!!!! if the card came with a fan it means the the metalic piece of the heat sink might me not enough to keep it safe. If the fan dies , bye bye miss american Nvidea pie!!
Thts eve more true when your overclocking like many are.
I had mine in default settings (creativeG-force 256 SDR)
and it had a tiny fan, it died a few months back and I knew this when I saw some issues on the screen. It was overheating, Fortunatly I realized that in time and replaced the fan with another of from an old CPU I had, it still workin!
I made two long screws pass through the 2 small holes on the card (the fan is mounted diagonaly!! ) and connectd the fans terminal on one of the avaiable plugs ( I had a plug adapter for plugs like the one of the CD-rom anyway).
Overclockin for these cards is generaly a bad Idea, if the fans dies the card dies too.

My specs are 1333 Mhz Athlon Thunderbird
512 MB Ram
NVidia GeForce DDR 32 MB (which just screwed up)
and a crappy Abit KT7A motherboard.
Look, I have to work on a limited budget, gotta buy a new graphics card under 800 mk budget (that's somewhat like 125$) and at this point it looks like that I'm going to buy Radeon 7200.

There was a electrical spike or a malfunction at my power source because I was playing Independence War 2 and suddenly the computer just shut itself down. Moment later I smelled like something had burned and I opened my PC case and noticed that it's one memory chip had burned. It still works but just not very well...
And Mr.Fury, guarantine won't work because it had a years warranty and I bought it last year on July. So...
Seems that Radeon 7200 it is then...

Ouch on the powerspike dealie.
When you go to get a new card, make sure you grab a surge protector powerbar. They work with varying degrees of success and they won't stop lightning (too fast, too strong) but they can safe your computer from some of the less powerful surges (even during a thunderstorm when the power lines get hit and the capacitors at the power stations grab the power first).

A power spike its not enough to blow up components inside your CPU case!!!! I live in an area where powerspikes are frequent, and never had a problem like that, only once has my PC reseted when power sudden whent a tad down (lights went half intensity). Normaly the powersuply usualy protect your PC against burn ups... unless the power went from 220V to 350V !!!
That would mean a serious large scale malfunction on the supply network. These spikes usualy happen when one or more power supply distribution node stations try to re-route the power to another alternative way when theres a failiure at another node.
These are located wherever a mavor line splits in 2 or more lines for a specific city or location distribution, far away from the plant. These kind of failiures are frequent, especialy during bad weather.
Fried components as a result of this is abnormal...unless your power suply in your PC case is crapy, when I got my hands on the first T-bird 1200 it blew up because the power supply was 260W and it burned up suddenly taking the CPU with it.
Your power PC supply must have failed to compensate and let the distorted current signal pass directly to your motherboard.
Swich power supply, usualy theire swapable and not expensive. Get a decent 300W or even 350W if you find it for extra safety.

:cough: GeForce 2 Ti. Or you can probably grab a GF2 Pro or Ultra for $100-ish.

Have you guys heard bout a thing called G-force3 Ti500??
its cheaper version of G-force3 its cheaper than any non Mx Geforce-2.
Of course finding it on stores right now is another question... so far I have seen only the "regular" G-force 3

People. The GF2 Ti is cheaper than a GF3, no matter what.
The GF2 Ti is also in his ~$150us price range.
The Radeon 7200 is not a good idea, considering that
A) If you get Radeon, get the 8500.
B) Get a GF2 Ti, you can grab a great cheap GF2 Ti that'll be more bang for your dollar than a Radeon - since like I said, 8500's are expensive.

Actually the Ti500 is at the top of nVidias range making it more expensive than a regular GF3 (which now sites at the middle of the range). I believe your referring to the GF3 Ti200
At any rate whichever GF3 you buy you're still paying too much money for too little appreciable benefit. None of the GF3s advanced features are supported by games yet and when they are the price would have dropped (mainly due to nVidia releasing 2-3 more chipsets in that time period). It makes no sense to buy a GF3 now.
