open discussion : The fligh model.
Well, I played a round FS2 and noticed the ships are quite slow.
Then I saw "A view from the gallery" or what the ep is called with the two technicans.
Byron gives one of him the impression to sit in a cockpit.
That's exactly the atmophere I think we should try to recreate .
Who remembers the days of the the good old TIE FIGHTER ?
We have started to discuss the details of the flight model we wanna use .
In FS2 it was flying a sitting duck . Weapons were quite useless and your had to try to hit other sitting ducks several times to kill'em.
There was no need for cunning flight maneuvers , just ensure your shield energy doesnt get depleted.
Personally I wanna have a rebirth of the way flying was with TIE-Fighter .
In comparison to FS2 ships should
- be 2-3 times as fast ( top speed of over 200 )
- maneuverable !
- FAR more vulnerable . You don't have to handle your damned ShieldSys ( no shields )
But you can perform real hotshot maneuvers !
- a clear hit destroys a Zephyr and even a Nial can be toasted with 2 or 3 shots.
But like your own craft they are difficult to hit. That's the way I wanna have space combat.
What do you think ?

I dont remember those days, but I think if we speed up ships 2 to 3 times faster, it'll be harder than hell to tag a ship and skill will just be sheer luck. At least it's my opinion. If we can speed the ships up, and keep it balanced, I'm all for it =)
I just think back to Freespace 1 where you have a bunch of Dragons attack you, it was near impossible to hit them. Especially with primary fire.
One thing though is in B5, battles didn't last long on screen, mainly to make sure they didn't take forever. Battles that lasted long, involved hundreds of ships.
Just my 2 cents...

No I'm saying we have to keep the length of missions long. In B5 though (the show not the game), battles ended up always being short.

Surely we are tweaking the tables far after the final mod is released by updates.

well flying the starfury with the current table settings is damn near suicide when facing mulitple nials - abit of extra speed wouldn't hurt - maybe just make the burners make more ofa difference - like tripple your speed or something would make getting out of the line of fire abit easier and lets face it without sheilds you need that

Current StarFury's fly at 90m/s which is a good 20-30 m/s over most FS2 ships.
I think I might up that to maybe 120 for the StarFury and higher for the Nial. Afterburners could have quite an effect ("goto maximum burn!") if we felt that was a good thing to do.
I suggested to Skullar that we could at the very least have a "HyperTables" set that makes things really really fast and quick and then a slightly more conventional set of tables that I'm thinking of as the norm.

If we cannot let battles last long , what the hell are we doing here if each mission is a 20 seconds "boom-boom-that-was-it" thing ?
Hey , we can make a highscore list :
Player time to play through TBP

Skullar 4 min 30 secs
Seether 4 min 26 secs
Cpt.White 6 min 45 secs ( yes , the guys from the island aren't that fast )
IceFire 2 min 52 secs ( He has a fast PC )
Rictor1 3 min 59 secs
and so on.

The ships should be a little bit faster than they are now in Freespace2. And What comes in those days when the mighty Tie Fighter appeared, I liked too the flight model that they had in Tie. Fast, no shields, few shots blasts your ships appart,that gives you something to fight for .

True for the TIE's but most SW Fighters are slower than thouse in FS2 (better sheilds/primaries less warhead streanth (more damage /less cargo space)/less hull

About that "hard to hit them" thing... It should be! Who enjoys turkey shooting? I'd like to work to get a kill. "press button and there goes one, press button again and there goes another one", where's the challenge in that

In fact, AI is pretty accurate in shooting down newbies. So there's a challenge for you, if still not enough, turn AI to General and give it a try. 
Nah, more than one general is needed to shoot down skilled pilot (like myself)

Well, staying alive isn't the problem... It's how enjoyable it's going to be...
Besides, insane (I mean the difficulty level) general is easy to kill in one-to-one dogfight (and pretty damn fun ), but when you have whole wing of them coming up your tailpipe...

i have some tables files for those who think they are aces to play with and if they can take out my ssuper fighter alone with any of the normal freespace weapons and ships then i think they are the amoung the best - i have killed it with slightly enhanced weapons alone or with 7 wingmen of which none survived but i got away with 18%hull - now that was a hard kill 20 mins of solid dogfight but it hard work but when it blew up much satisfaction

Wouldn't be so sure about ships in SW being slower than those in FS2. I've collided with my wingmen and enemy ships so many frickin' times it isn't funny, and this is because I and they were moving too slow, not too fast. I'm all for having fast ships in B5.

How fast do you think would be reasonable? Not just to you, or me, or Skullar....but to the "general public" who will play this MOD?
Thats the question you should be asking yourselves because thats exactly the question I'm going to ask myself.
We don't want to turn off the general group of people because our MOD makes gameplay too hard. We want it to be fun and so do you. Thats why im encouraging the possibility of a "hyper tables" set that you could replace the standard afair with. And if you think that im not for high speed, high octane, high risk action in a game you're wrong, I'm a fairly frequent player on Subspace's Xtreme Games server where the speeds, guns, bombs, and everything are jacked up and the damage you can take is virtually none. Its a battle of wits and a battle of reflexes and its great. I just don't know exactly how things will balance out.
We'll find out of course
