No voices during mission.

Greets,

I dug up this old CD from a crate after moving, and fired Freespace 2 after many years, having fun w/ it

I noticed that in the default campaign I have only text displayed during missions, and have no dialogue sound (I do have special effects & Music working well).

is this normal, or am I missing on something? I'ts hard to cope with the situation when I have an escort mission, trying to keep up with that tiny text sure is hard.

I also sometimes have CTDs when changing craft/weapons, I noticed that the "video" on the top right usualy displays some weird effect/lines before my puter crashes.

Is there a way to raise the resolution above 1024/768?

Thank you.

Well, chances are you have got ahold of one of the stripped down versions of FS2 or your computer somehow missed some install files and its not spooling them from the CD like it should. Here is what you should do, try a training mission, if that has sound you are using the stripped down version of FS2 and there is no hope of any sound on the other missions unless you aquire a full verison of FS2. If that doesnt work, make sure you have all 3 CD's and then try reinstalling the entire program (saving your player files of course.) I would guess and say that reistalling will fix 60% of the problems you are dealing with (or any other game for that matter.)

Sounds like a bad install to me too.

Here's a list of the .vp files you should have in your FS2 folder.

# root_fs2.vp
# sparky_fs2.vp
# sparky_hi_fs2.vp
# stu_fs2.vp
# tango1_fs2.vp
# tango2_fs2.vp
# tango3_fs2.vp
# smarty_fs2.vp
# warble_fs2.vp

They should all be big files (at least 50MB) rather than small dummy files.

If you are installing the HotU version or something like it do tell. Unlike most game boards we don't have a big problem with the cracked/ripped version of this game because FS2 was unavailable to buy for so long (although other warez stuff is frowned upon).

As for the resolution question. Nope.

It's a legal version alright, I have 3 CD's in a box, and I remember having had no sound either when I played it a few years ago.

I remember having had FS1 as a pack with my soundcard back then, and I then boufgt FS2. This is weird...

(It's about the 4th re-install)

Very odd. Have you tried FS2_open? It may be that you have a bug that they've cured. Follow the link in my sig. Just install the exe and the launcher. Leave the optional stuff for now.

Oh and not to be insulting but check that you haven't accidently turned off voice in the options menus

lol, for some odd reason I did check that right after I posted the above, and YES, it's turned on, full volume.

I tried setting the sound acceleration to different levels, still no joy.

I'll follow that link of yours right now, will report back ASAIC.

Thx for the help btw

It works! I have in game voices now thank you!

(Although I have to mention that Jay or whoever boice I picked reminds me a lot of the old Soundblaster-Pro parot program... only this time, he seems to be suffering from acute diarhea )

This is soo much better though!

I just ran it in OpenGL 1280/1204 and played the 1st mission. I'm back on the site to download the other addons.

I noticed a few bugs (maybe it's because I ran it in unsupported resolution, I saw a message saying it was unsupported)

-Aiming piper help is off (way off)
-I loose sight the HUD now and then
-Ships seem very dark (default lighning set, have to fiddle with that)

Yeah. I would have mentioned FS2_open earlier but it's generally better to have a working copy of FS2 retail first.

Still as a last resort it's worth trying

1 is because of the unsupportred resolution.

2 is also because of the unsupported resolution.

3 is because of a few modifications to the code. The specular highlights really darken the maps, but it looks alot better this way, IMO. There are also various command line flags for changing stuff. Check the wiki links on the top right corner of the HLP SCP Forum.

Aming thing can also be because of using the -FOV commandline.

BTW, what forked the tables for this thread?

I doubt it. I use it all the time, and I have no problems.

LS reported the bug, Bob confirmed it, and i saw it as well.

The secondary and primary lead indicators are not at the same place.

Isn't there an ambient light command line for some of the more recent FSO builds?

yeah, -ambient_factor xx with default somewhere around 80. That is, if I'm so far down the road of geekdom to remember that, since I can hardly check the wiki right now. (It's hosted on HLP, for those who are wondering).
