New FS2 limited Edition
I have good news or at least I hope I do!
See the following emails below (newest first) to get the picture but (clutching at straws) could it be a simply test to see how the market is?
And the test shows very good signs could it be possible to make a third????
Regards
Darren T
Hey Darren,
Go ahead and spread the word! We just had a meeting about it this morning. There will be 2000 copies available, and only through the Interplay store. They will be numbered copies and will be selling for $49.95. We will probaby start taking pre-orders in a couple weeks. We will be sending out an email announcement, and also plastering it all over the site when it goes into the store.
So keep an eye out on the week of the 26th!

Ah excellent news (or not as regards the CD), is this "limited edition" news the kind of information you wouldn't mind being spread amongst other FS2 fans? as I have had a quick look about and no one seems to be talking about it, and I'm sure people would buy it, if there is the slightest "hint" that this would be a testing the water exercise for a possible 3rd instalment!! In fact, if word gets about well enough (unlike the first attempt at FS2) I think it could be a big success
If course it would be a futile exercise to ask for any details on this I guess?
Thanks for the Information anyway, and I'll be happy to spread the word if it's ok?
Regards
Darren

Hi Darren,
Unfortunately we do not have any replacement CD's available for this game. It has been out of print for some time, and the games popularity quickly depleted our replacement stash.
You will be happy to know, however, that we are planning on rereleasing this game in a limited edition. I don't know when this will happen, but it should be soon! Just keep your eyes on Interplay.com. We will definitely announce when it is back in the store.
Thanks!

Question: Is it possible to get a hold of a replacement CD? I haven't played FS2 for about a year and a bit but decided it was time to dust of the cob-webs and get right back in to it, only my significantly faster CD drive seems to of fractured the 3rd CD in three places, one of which has spread right from the centre to the outer edge, thankfully it didn't explode as I have seen before from damaged CD's running very fast, and thus didn't trash my drive as well but I am a bit annoyed it happened in the first place! oh the 3rd CD bit was from the Gold Edition of FS2. So any help here would be great, oh, one more thing while I'm at it.....FS3??? There are an awful lot of people out there that would appreciate a proper sequel...sorry I could resist! How's about asking them to update the community links on the various official FS2 sites with current and active FS2 community sites, such as VW and HLP? You seem to have an in with them...

How is it with the interplay store? do they ship abroad? I know lucasarts one doesn't (and I curse them for it!). I'm thinking that $50 for a limited rerelease of my fav game could be worth it. especially now when I recently bought 3 copies of freespace 1 for less than $10...

Spread the word
Hello once more! unfortunatly i dont have any more news and frankly they have been good enough to give me as much as they did so im not going to ask!
The word is spreading pretty quick and its possible.....maybe not probable, that if enough people try to buy this then a sequal / add-on might be considered!
Still, since my copy is arsed up because of a faulty drive i'll be on that list and i think everyone should show them whilst they are listening that we are still waiting!!........but there is one issue for all those not in America, they dont ship to the UK, which is a bit of a pain in the arse. so best get on the phone to those distant relatives!
Regards
Darren

Greetings Gents! :-)
I was up late tonight battling the Shivans for the umpteenth time and thought I would take a moment to peruse this bulletin board for any (good?) news on the Freespace front.
Just when I'd gotten used to the idea that there will never be a Freespace 3 (it took lots of therapy to get over that one) here comes Volition with a possible tease: Freespace 2 Limited Edition?!?
Since I work in the gaming industry (I am part of a Tech Support and Development Group for a flight simulation software line) I can tell you that NO DEVELOPER would put forth the production time/money/resources/etc to re-release a long dead gaming title, in limited edition or otherwise, UNLESS they were "testing the waters" at some level.
Yes, they've made it clear that there are no plans for a Freespace 3. At the same time, Freespace STILL has an enormouse following after all this time (they need look no further than the Freespace Mod community for that) AND, by their own admission all their replacement CD ROM were cleaned out very quickly because of Freespace's tremendous popularity (new disks aren't needed if the game isn't being played).
Unless they are asleep over there at Volition, it is clear that Freespace has stood the test of time and is still a favorite game for a great many (myself included of course!).
How many games from that long ago can lay claim to that?
Knowing first hand that no developer will invest in anything that would not likely be profitable (sorry guys, gaming will always be a "business" first) it would only make sense that Volition would release a Freespace Limited Edition to see how well it fares.
Being understandably cautious, limiting this re-release of the greatest space combat simualtion in history to 2000 copies would be a fair test of the waters indeed. If this limited edition flys off the shelves, then obviously there is a demand. Where there is significant enough demand, it follows that someone would want to supply for it (dare I say it: Freespace 3?).
To be perfectably frank, Freespace is (in my opinion) of the most polished and utterly playable games I've ever seen. It make gaming turds like Freelancer (no joystick support - stu-pid!), Alligance (ZZzzzz...), Starlancer (great game but too short - where's the beef?) and the like pale in comparison. I'll bet you'll never see a limited edition release for any of these years from now.
While I can't speak for them, I can only re-new a glimmer of hope that the talented folks at Volition see the demand from the Freespace modding community and the speed at which their soon-to-be-released Freespace Limited Edition flys off the shelves (undoubtedly it will sell VERY quickly) as proof positive that a follow up to Freespace 2 would be worthy of investment. Undoubtedly, once all those 2000 copies are gone, the inevitable cries for more from those who missed out will also help them change their minds. Hopefully...
If I have to, I'll personally buy all 2000 copies myself just to jump start their attention to Freespace.
Voliton really created a masterpiece with the Freespace universe, as a gamer and as a member of the game developement community I can only stress to them strongly that any future releases for the Freespace universe would be a sure $ale for me. They already have my m-o-n-e-y for Freespace 3. They just have to build it so I can give it to them.
Cheers - Mister_E

freespace2.com
Thats what i kind of figured i think this is a once only test though and we really need to show them how many people want a sequal, but on a side note has anyone noticed freespace2.com has been down these last few days? seems a bit odd unless they are moving servers for increased bandwidth....or of course they may of just forgot to renew it!

It must be remembered that even if FS3 does come about it is unlikely that Volition would be the ones to make it since they are now owned by THQ.
I will agree on the enourmous playablity of FS2. I remember picking up a recent games guide and FS2 was still number 1 space shooter dispite its age.

I think V's servers are just down. The other sites sitting on servers at Volition are down as well.

i have only spoken to interplay, so yeah, i guess volition may not have anything to do with it, but you never really know about these things do you!
As for the domains being down, its been 4 days now, and if it is true that Volition have been left out of the loop (since the code was released) they might not be to chuffed with Interplay!
Of course we could see anything from these events, none of which maybe be true.

Interplay (as far as we know - as far as they know ) own the publishing rights to the game. I'm not sure if they could also then find a studio or an internal development group to build a sequel if that was their intention. If they DID...there would be pre-requisites in my mind as to what kind of things they would have to do to gain the acceptance of the community and that would start with following the already established storyline.

If they had intentions they'd confront the original developer first, in this case Volition. From that point if V chose not to work on the game, Interplay would then as you said find a studio...

no they wouldn't becase V is now owned by THQ, Interplay's arch rival.
maybe they'll come to us
we could finish BWO as an expantion/teaser, then develop a new game based on the FSO engine, engine would remain open source, but the game content (models/missions) would be only for sale.

you know now that Todd is no longer V's web lord, maybe he should once again dawn the persona of Wild Wolf, and lose the V god logo.

I tried to, but apparently I'm not allowed to use the WildWolf account.. wtf!
How about this - I'll ask. Then we'll know for sure if Volition has anything to do with this or not. THEN WE'LL KNOW!! Or at least I will.

OK I asked. I don't think Volition has much involvement with this, so I wouldn't expect this to have any bearing on Volition doing FS3.

It doesn't matter who owns Volition, and yes I've taken into account what Todd has said. I remember someone at Volition saying that if Interplay chose to make a sequel to Freespace2 or to any game for that matter, the original developers always have first preference. Only then will the publisher go looking for another developer, I think that actually brings a reason to this rule or law is because chosing another developer may have a greater chance of screwing up the game and profits made on that
