Just got Freespace 1, extremely frustrated with "Playing Judas"...
I'm kinda new to this game, since the Mac port is a fairly recent thing.
I can easily get as far as the Eva, but then I can see no way to scan the Eva without getting run over repeatedly and eventually blown up as it quickly enters subspace. The problem is, the only place I can find to scan it is perpendicular to the underside, and the dragon doesn't have lateral thrusters. If I try to follow along, I eventually sidle right into the big gray hump and collide. Of course usally the "connection" has been broken long before this. I have scanned it twice almost by accident, and the first time my hull was so weakened from collisions that Rama blew me up before I could enter subspace (I hit Alt-H by accident) and the second time Rama failed to make an appearance, despite my spending about half an hour repeatedly flying by (and ramming) both fighter bays.
I'm thinking that Rama not showing might just be a problem with the Mac beta, but there's no way to know until I figure out how to scan the Eva with ease.

I always have trouble getting Rama to make an appearance, it just seems that sometimes I get lucky.

If you're flying the FS1 port for FS2, then the problem is the waypoints. In FRED, rama's entrance is keyed to the player's ship coming within a certain range of one of two waypoints, located to align with the Lucifer's fighterbays once she's come to a complete stop. Unfortunately, I've found that in the port, they are miss-aligned, so that the Lucifer arrives far to the left of the watpoints. I've noted this in the HLP forum under the Freespace Conversion's "Bugs" thread. I'm hoping that when the version that requires SCP comes out, that Galactic Emperor or GalEMP as he's called now, will use the "Distance-from-subsystem" sexp to activate this, rather than the waypoints.
Later!

I just love the way everyone missed the important info in that sentence!
Have you got a link to the mac versions home page for my FAQ? (I really ought to link to the Amiga version too)

There's a Mac port?
The Eva you have to prepare for. Get just a bit under the jump node and as soon as she jumps in, get moving! As she slides past pivot your craft and keep it centered. Ensure that you are not targeting any subsystems (check key controls to deactivate subsystem tracking).
That should do the trick. Next up is the Lucifer.
Note: This is the hardest or second hardest mission in the game. Only one possibly harder and that one is coming up

It should be at http://homepage.mac.com/tigital but for some reason the page gives an error. The very long and dormant IMG topic is at http://www.insidemacgames.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7623&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=180 Feel free to bump it. I've already posted so much to it recently that I'd feel kinda guilty.
I've read about the Lucifer issue, but tigital or someone mentioned that a temporary fix was in place - the fact that Rama showed the first time I played would be evidence of this.
Edit: I beat the mission. Turns out I was being mislead by Ratri group (you have to get real up close and personal with them) into thinking that I had to get within 150m of the center of the ship. However I guess that, as a general rule, the distance you can be from a ship to scan it is directly proportional to the size of the ship. I was able to follow the Eva at a healthy distance and scan it. Then I got blown up by Rama and had to replay the mission two more times.

well, mac os x runs on a unix core, doesn't it? that'd make the step from the linux port to a mac port relatively small, I'd think.

Which means the mac people and linux people over at the SCP should really get together.

Well I posted on the mac board that LoneIgadzra linked to. I invited any fans of the mac version to come and join us here and on HLP.
