Angry Afterburner problem

I've just got a new PC, so naturally I loaded freespace 1 & 2 onto it. However, whenever I try to use the afterburner it doesn't work (in exactly the same way as when its out of fuel). This happens in both versions of freespace, regardless of what key(s) I have bound to the afterburner. In all other respects, the games work fine. Can anyone help?

The link you provided describes my problem pretty accurately, but twhith one exception: I'm running Windows 2000, NOT XP. Therefore there is no compatability tab under properties. Its also probably worth noting that m y brother runs freespace on his windows 2K machine without any problmes. Any advice?

You're the first person I've heard of who has experienced this problem with 2K. In XP some people got it but most people (including myself) never saw this problem.
That means that I can only give advice based on what I've heard worked for other people.

This problem tended to appear when people reinstalled FS2 on a new PC or one which had recently been upgraded. That tends to make me think that the problem is due to something new in Windows (Which may explain why you brother can run it without problems).
