FreeSpace: FreeSpace Strategy?

Some idle conjecture on the VBB has gotten some attention from Dave B. This is what Dave had to say about FreeSpace in a strategy setting:
To do proper justice, I think the game would have to be turn based. I would like to see truly massive 100 capship size battles with all kinds of new weapon types and fighters/bombers. To properly manage (or micromanage), you'd need turn-based.
Plus, this kind of game is totally ideal for a large multiplayer element, almost like how Blizzard does Diablo 2 stuff with the Realm Servers. Imagine yourself and your clan/squad squaring off against another clan/squad where each of you had your assigned battle groups to command. Giving orders and reports to each other, etc... And in a turn-based scenario, this would all be feasible on the most pitiful of modems. Pretty compelling reasons, IMO.
Sounds very interesting to me. The FreeSpace universe has so many directions it can be taken in hopefully its allowed by the publishers to properly take it in various directions.
