Battle System Peeves ,and praise
Well I've been waiting for Summoner 2 since I finished the 1st one.
but 7 hours into the game I find the battle system in the S2 to be too much hack and slash for success.
I've tried to use block, dodge. I've tried keeping a lock on a target and back tracking to keep all enemies in front of me... Yet they seem to over power me surround me quickly which leave me no choice but to hack away.
is this the way it is ??
I know of the combos and all the special abilities that I can attach, but when your getting hacked at by a group your not going to be casting much or your still going to be hacking away with a weapon that has poison or fire added to it.
My main beef came in the prison where you take all 3 characters on solo runs
No matter what I tried I'd get 3-5 enemies coming at me at once. This is cool in my book, but I didn't level up before hand because I prefer not to run around a level beating the same enemies over and over just for that sake.
This however makes battles more challenging which is what I wanted, yet when surrounded you haven't much choice but to keep hacking away take your licks and hope you can reduce the packs numbers enough to be able to use block. Dodge however isn't so good, since you become vulnerable for a second in the process
NOW I agree that this style of combat is much better then Baldurs Gate which I found to be so repetitive and boring I was extremely glad it was a super short game.
AND I do believe Volition is on the right track with their Summoner series
BUT I think there is still significant room for improvement in the the way the action battle system is used. There needs to be a more solid strategy element, where using block and dodge and timing your attacks can make for some pretty battle combos
I do like the game, just pointing out my opinions
I do like the Ally AI function, but that could be improved I'm sure as well
I really would prefer some better strategic elements, or am I missing something obvious in regards to battle strategies
overall though I still love the Summoners brand of RPG and hope more developers create more in depth action RPG's with great storylines !!!!!!
