Smile Dvd Mania

Just a little off topic but I just got the B5 DVD in the beginning/the gathering and I wanna say WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry bout that i've just waited a long time to get this.

My only complaint about the DVD (besides the total absence of bonus features) is that the picture quality is not as good as I hoped. Oh well you can't have everthing.

Here's a question-what software/hardware do you need to extract AUDIO from a DVD?

Another question-what software/hardware do you need to
extract Video from a DVD?

Any help would be appreciated.

P.S. I can't wait for the season 3 and season 4 boxed sets to come out!!!!!(those were my 2 favorite seasons)

Well, obviously you need a DVD-ROM to extract either audio or video directly from a DVD in the hardware department.

Software-wise, it's a bit tricky. I haven't touched this stuff in a while, but I have a vague recollection of what I did.

First you need a program to rip the vobs from the DVD. I know it has something to do with the Decss encryption or whatever, but I can't remember specifically what it's called. Shouldn't be too hard to look up.

From that, you can get another program that rips the AC3 track from the vobs, and turns it into either one big wav or mp3 file.

Usually with the video, you can use FlaskMPEG to encode the vobs to DivX or something else. Takes several hours, but you can always do that overnight.

There's probably a way to do the previous few things all at once, but the method I used needed VirtualDub to multiplex the audio and video back together.

Take a look at vcdhelp.com. There might be information there that actually makes sense, as opposed to my rambling. Good luck.

Oh, and one more thing for any Americans here regarding DVDs...
Take a look at amazon.ca if you're interested in the B5 Season 1 Box Set. There's a 1st-time customer coupon out for $10CDN off $50CDN. The B5 box set preorder with this coupon and shipping added comes out to about $42US. Compare that to $75 at Amazon US. The coupon code is CANADASMAG5T. Just enter that when you're checking out. Hopefully the CDN and US releases are pretty much the same.

Doom5 or Doom9.org or something has everything you need for DVD ripping. Everyone has a personal favorite program, too, so don't just assume because someone suggests one program that you shouldn't try another

(I read an A/V forum somewhere else, and man, DVD ripping debates...yikes )
