Question FS1 Question - How can I get all the medals?

I'm very determined to get every single medal, as I've got an obsessive behavior towards being the best in any game. But which missions should I watch out for to get the medals? Has anyone ever gotten them all? So far I've gotten these -

Commendation Medal - From the mission where you disable the Vasudan Transport.

Distinguished Flying Cross - From blowing up a Shivan ship on the first encounter.

Vasudan Alliance Medal - For helping protect all 4 transports carrying shield prototypes.

Right now, I'm at the mission "The Darkness and the Light", where the objectives is to disable and capture the HOL Cruiser Ramses. While playing this mission, I've also managed to receive some sort of Ace medal for outstanding kills. How many of these can I expect to receive, and how can I get them?

Also, I've read in the only FAQ(from GameFAQs.com) that I can find on FreeSpace, that it would be necessary to play some missions on Normal or higher difficulty to get a medal. Which missions would these be?

Sorry for all the questions, but I really, really, really want to get every single darn medal in this game, even if it takes me a very, very long time. Thanks for any help.

The aces are explained in my FAQ. You get them based on number of kills.

Thanks. BTW, getting ace medals is based on overall kills throughout the entire campaign, right?

Not necessarily, just plain number of kills. You get 'em no matter which campaign you play, and you don't have to finish the campaign first. You get 'em as soon as you reach the appropriate number.

I think the FS1 ace medals are a bit different - I'm pretty sure it goes 50, 100, and 300, not 65, 150, and 420 like in FS2.

Oh and you *do* have to play on Normal/Medium or above to get two medals (in missions Doomsday and Black Omega; both of these are much later in the campaign). It is possible to finish the campaign having gotten every single medal.

Still play FS1? Check out my upcoming campaign, Fortunes of War.
Play FS2 instead? Check out my finished minicampaign, Deus Ex Machina. :D

You could be right. I think I vaguely remember that.

There is one you get in Clash of the titans, but you have to be on medium, destroy the tantalous, and keep the bastion above 35% or something... Its REALLY hard to get it... I always fail it somehow... either the bastion gets too damaged, of the tantalous departs... if i disable it, the nepheilms seem to wipe out the bastion...

Oh right, I forgot about that one.

It's tricky, but I've been able to get it. My strategy is to take an Ursa loaded with Harbingers, giving all my wingmen interceptors. I assign my wingmen to protect the Bastion while I take out the Tantalus as fast as possible, parking myself next to the hangar bay so I can destroy most of the bombers as they emerge. Then I hightail it back to the Bastion and dogfight until it jumps out. (Dogfighting in an Ursa is challenging, but fun. ) I haven't tried it above Medium, but I've been able to destroy the Tantalus and get the Bastion out with hull above 50%.

I haven't tried this in the port to FS2, but I imagine it would be a lot harder because of flak guns.

I didn't know there were flak guns or beams in the fs1 port. I think the only beam is on the Lucifer, but no flak.

The FS1->FS2 port doesn't use flak? I thought it did (I haven't played it yet). That's a relief. In that case, the strategy would work the same.

I guess that makes sense, because in one of the FS2 missions a pilot comments on the Great War: "No shields, no beams, no flak guns," so for continuity's sake they would have to leave them out.

Okay, I wasn't very precise: the FS1 port would have to leave out flak and beams for continuity. The wingman wasn't 100% accurate.

(Or maybe he was referring to the fact that when we *began* the Great War we had no shields. In any case, FS2 isn't always completely reliable in relating history. Sometimes it refers to events in such a way as to treat the T-V war as part of the Great War.)
