Silent Threat, Mission 9 (help!)

I am really losing my mind on this one! Can anyone offer a winning strategy to this? It's the one where the Krios gets destroyed and you gotta escort 8 escape pods to the jump node outta there, before they get slaughtered.
Trouble is, I got 9 Loki fighters to deal with who all they care about is massacring these poor souls. The 9 soon becomes 13 plus one Leviathan cruiser!! With my squad of 3 Ursas and 3 hercs, I dont have a prayer. Now if I had 6 Valkyries, I could obliterate them all. Does the ship choice in mission 8 have anything to do with mission 9? (which is unchangeable btw)
Need some tips please! (or a savegame )

I seem to recall that's a Red Alert mission, which means you start out with the loadout from the previous mission. If you get yourself killed (say, by setting the difficulty to Insane) you have the option to replay the previous mission, where you can change your loadout with the knowledge you're going to use the same ships and weapons in the next mission.

I seem to recall that's a Red Alert mission, which means you start out with the loadout from the previous mission. If you get yourself killed (say, by setting the difficulty to Insane) you have the option to replay the previous mission, where you can change your loadout with the knowledge you're going to use the same ships and weapons in the next mission.

Good stuff guys, especially ice, cheers.
In order to get a different craft, I've tried replaying mission 8 three times now. With the Loki, the Valkyrie and the Ulysses. And in each time I finish 8 and go straight into 9 with a damned Ursa. The slowest freakin bucket in the fleet! I'd be better off with an Apollo! I wish I had Beta's ships which are Hercs.
At the mo I'm grounded to a mere 90 m/s on full afterburn while my enemies can go 170 m/s I just cant compete, even on very easy level and it shames me for even trying it on that.

Is this a bug then?

I'm considering editing the individual mission with FRED after I can decompile it somehow and then recompile it back into the vp file. Are there tools to let me do this?

Full info on that sort of thing in my FAQ. Read the Freespace Directory Structure section. The info was written with FS2 in mind but is mostly correct for FS1 too.
The mission is possible without cheating though

I've had the Hercules, Ulysses, Valkyrie, AND Ursa in my play experiences. Its pretty strange...

Use your wingmen in this case. Their turrets infact can help cover the retreat of the escape pods. Just take a guard position and try and nail the Loki's with massed firepower at close range. I know that makes it even harder...but with some luck you may do it. And that Leviathan later on will definately take more punishment from a wing of Ursa's.
