So what do you think? Iam trying to get a 3d effect from a 2d image.

Heh, try 3D glasses!

On a serious note though, I can see an aspect of depth to it and I think it looks good. Tell me, is that in FreeSpace 2?

That's pretty cool.
It does have some sense of depth in that the sides of the nebula appear closer to the viewpoint than the middle, but apart from that the nebula looks flat.
Not that it would be noticeable when dogfighting a few squadrons of Dragons.
