Raider ideas for Lady Rose. Hurrah.
Hullo all.
Well, Lady Rose asked for some ideas and being the gentleman that I am, seemingly grounded in the realms of Victorian era ettiquette, I cannot refuse. Especially since she is a quality mission builder. Thus I am indebted to tell her my ideas for the missions involved.
Right, first off. Definitely have the campaign from the Raiders point of view. Did you know that since the B5 TV series began calls to the Samaritans from the raider community have more than trippled? They feel lonely and useless due to their complete lack of talent in shooting down furies. With gentle guidance via your remarkable babbage engine combined with B5 sim, you can aid our dimwitted pirate friends!
I assume in this that we do not yet have a player pilotable Zephyr ship. Now for my sinister creative-effort-on-your-part crushing blow-by-blow account of a spiffing campaign idea.
Mission 1: Your first mission leading the wing of raiders. Your father has left you his stolen Starfury in his will. Your first mission is to hijack a freighter and beat off a rival raider force. (Start things simple)
Mission 2: A convoy of shuttles. But you are ambushed by furies? Get out alive back to the jump gate. How did they know?
Mission 3: Your father informs you that the EA have bugged one of your automated listenening posts. (Bunch of containers stuck together) You have to go and escort a raider shuttle to board the containers and remove the bug. Furies try and stop you of course, and a hyperion. You manage it but the containers explode due to caddish behavior in the booby-trapping front by the unsporting EA. You beat a gentlemanly withdrawl.
Mission 4: Your organisation is now more or less in the dark, for several months you are unable to pick up transmissions outside the systems largely nearby. Your father eventually decides it is time for another escorting shuttle mission. This time to place your own bug on the sensor array of a lightly defended commercial proxima-class station. With this bug you can detect jump signitures, analyse them and respond quickly to freighter convoy jumps. To mask your intentions you attack several docked freighters and dual with the light-to-medium EA defences.
Mission 5: You are sent on a mission to attack a freighter bearing Quantium 40. The freighter screams hysterically at you, claiming that you are signing both your own and his death warrents by delaying him in such a mission. You are confused and tell him so. He starts screaming something about the Minbari and how if he doesn't get out of here he could be next. You are, of course, confused immensely. You decide that it is just a cunning ploy of his. You disable the frieghter only to have two or three Novas and a couple of Hyperions exit. The freighter shouts most joyfully, hailing the EA ships and asking for assistance. But the EA ships burn past the both of you on full engine speed. They explain that they have to get back to one of the colony worlds quickly. They have to regroup. They are sorry, but they cannot help. The freighter screams at them. Tells them that he is carrying Quantium 40. They apologise again, 'sorry, but there's nothing that we can do...' and so on. They leave. Your wingmen get jittery. Quantium 40 and the EA is abandoning him to us? Could he be right? The freighter captain begins to pray. "Though I walk through the valley of death..." You scream at him to shut up. Suddenly two Minbari cruisers arrive. They spew out fighters. The captain is near madness. The Minbari open fire and slice through him. You order your men to get get out of there. Head for the jumpgate. Can you escape?
Mission 6: Back home safely. You try and convince everyone of the need to evacuate the base, head for somewhere out of the way. But they don't believe the true awful threat the Minbari represent. They say that they wouldn't trouble themselves over such a small base. You tell them of their destruction of an unarmed freighter. It is put to a vote. It is decided, there is to be no evacuation. Still, your father uses his influence to persuade the small raider colony to knock off any attacks. To keep quiet and avoid radio transmissions. Everyone agrees. Silence is maintained for a year.
Until a convoy of freighters stumble into your backyard. A group of hotshots, angry at the lack of action for so long, ignore orders and head off to disable them. They are cocky, they laugh as they shoot up their engines and weapon systems. There are cries from your father for them to stop but they pay no attention. The Minbari arrive, having picked up the freighter distress call. They attack. You must survive the initial attack.
Mission 7: Evacuate the base! The raider families race to their shuttles. You must escort them to the jumpgate. You see half the shuttles and most of your forces torn apart by the Minbari. But you and a few shuttles escape. Your father however has given his place up on a shuttle. He is terminally ill and let a young man go in his stead when the shuttle became full. He scuttles the station rather than let it be destroyed. You barely escape the Minbari.
Mission 8: The raiders have seen most of their family butchered. With a few dissensions they agree that they must help the EA against the Minbari. They join up with the EA fleet as a small Minbari scouting party probe the EA defences. Such a party is still dangerous though, so you help the EA defend themselves. This proves your loyalty. The EA take you on board. In debriefing an EA PR bloke (make it that creep Wells of Minipax from Fall of Night) tells you of the wonderful propaganda story that your raider squadron helping Earth in their fight will make. "The Lord rejoices more in the one saved than in the 99 that never strayed," he says, smarmily.
Misison 9: Your mission is revealed. A suicide mission. A Minbari ace cruiser is headed towards the fleet before they can regroup fully and head back home to defend Earth. Your mission is to stop it. It is pointed out (naturally) that Zephyrs have no chance with their weapons against a Minbari cruiser. They explain that the Zephyrs and your fury will be loaded up with experimental bombs. You will be required to fly kamikaze into the Minbari cruiser's engines. You angrily refuse. Suddenly a call comes through that a civilian refugee convoy is under attack. The plan is changed, for now. You must aid the EA against the Minbari attackers and save the civilians. Alongside a relief expedition of EA ships you try fight off the Minbari, but they massacre almost everyone including the civilians.
Mission 10: The raider force has grown larger. Many groups have joined now. Through what you saw and the experiences of other raiders in losing their loved ones, you agree to the attack. An EA man takes you aside. It is Wells. He explains that your ship has no bomb. A symbol must remain of the raider sacrifice. You are to be that symbol. You must protect the kamikaze ships until they complete their mission, but you are not to ram. You are to escort. Your ships are loaded up and you head out for their last mission. Choking back tears you ravage the Minbari who try to intecept the huge fleet of Zephyr kamikazes. Some of them recriminate you. Some of them reassure you, they tell you to look after any loved ones they might have on Earth. Eventually enough of the kamikazes get through. The cruiser has been halted and the EA fleet and yourself escape. But at a terrible cost.
And there you have it. My concept for a raider campaign. Sorry it went on for so long but I got carried away with the story. I just like the idea because it portrays the raiders as more than inherantly stupid cannon fodder with their three control buttons, crawl, semi-crawl and self-destruct.
Hope you indulged my bore-inducing yomp. Now to listen to some Bill Hicks, have a bottle of Old Speckled Hen and perhaps read some of Elmore Leonard's perfectly formed hardboiled LA crime thriller, 'Riding the Rap'.
Ah, Bill Hicks.
Cheers again for the B5 game,
Nervous Pete

Whimsical japery was the reason.
Ah ha! Yes! I know why.
The similarities are highly coincidental.
(Sceptical faces)
No, really.
You're thinking of the entire peaceful trading family getting embroiled in the rebellion, fleeing their home and eventually fighting for the alliance, eh?
Yeah, I can see the connection. Really, I just pondered the storyline at the bus stop idly, as I had forgotten my book that I customarily read in such tedious circumstances. I had an image of raiders sacrificing their lives through their love of Earth winning through blah-de-blah. Then I wondered as to the events leading up to such a thing.
The unusal story line is a good thing in computer games. I've just been playing your campaign. I've reached the hyperspace mission, the one following protecting Castro and the freighter, but my computer graphics card felt overloaded after over an hour of playing and crashed out.
*Spoilers for those who have nay played Lady Rose's stuff)
Thoughts about your campaign. Hngle-hmm. I thought it started out a little weak but then a few missions in seriously took off. The Nova ramming Minbari cruiser, the raider attack punctuated by Minbari assault and the defend Castro and hyperspace one are all seriously cinematic, so hurrah for you!
Oh, and how can I forget the shadow-nova? At least it got one of them, eh? Not entirely a waste of effort. The tricky thing with the Minbari campaign is that the EA is so hopelessly outmatched that the campaign demands 'run-away' plots. You've managed to keep these things remarkably interesting though with lots of little fan-boy objectives (Psi-omegas, Shadow-tech, that ramming Nova) to keep us all happy.
*Spoilers end*
My arms hurt badly.
I am frightened and confused by the ammount of 'What would win?' versus stuff on this board. Please end it. With guns if necessary.
However, fights between characters and things would be welcome. Who would win in a fight between Delenn and Christopher Walken? Who would win between an AA meeting and a drunken Garibaldi? Who would win in a toothpaste advert between Bill Clinton and Sheridan?
See?
SEE?
