Poll: Lightwave and 3D Studio Max
does anyone know if there is a time difference (in rendering) between lightwave and 3D Studio Max?
- any other differences between them?

yes.. Max appears to render "inaccurately", and therefore MUCH quicker than Lightwave..
Max's default renderer is a scanline shader of some kind, and not a raytracer, Max only raytraces shadows and objects with "raytrace" materials.. and then its raytracing doesn't seem all that good - I get bizarre shadows. ahem. "they move"
With everything on full, I think Lightwave will probably take longer but should get a better overall result than Max's default renderer.. but not an increase that's worthwhile of the 75 minutes per frame times I notice some people get with Lightwave...
my photorealistic max pics only took around 5 mins per frame.. though admittedly with object motion blur and such it would increase exponentially.
if you're doing any serious stills rendering in max, you really should be using something like brazil. (splutterfish.com)

I agree with Ashrak, he made a valid point, dont knock him down cos he pointed out edwins post was useless. But this is not about the topic, of which i am very interested in, as i will be starting to learn of the 2 packages over the summer, im probably going with 3ds at present.

I'm not really qualified to say - I do virtually no rendering / animation - but Max is very easy to model in - at least for what I do, although I've never tried hi-poly.
The uv-ing is a wee bit more cumbersome for large ships - ompared to TS - but it's definately a very powerful program for low poly modelling.... i've been able to massively improve my quality-per-poly for ships.
