For backgrounds: you need a .pcx images of 256x256, although you might be able to get have them bigger, I'm just not certain about that last bit.
For background nebula you want a pure black (or near enough) background over which you stick the nebula.
For planets, where you haven't got the planet images, the rest wants to be a shade of green which is 0, 255, 0
Once this is done you need to get the stars.tbl file and add the names of the .pcx bitmaps to it. I know nebula are rendered slight transparent but the planets ain't. The best (and easiest!) way to add a bitmap is to copy a line from the file corresponding to either a planet (if you're adding a planet) or nebula, paste it and replace the name of the copied planet/nebula with your own. Save the stars.tbl and it's done.
Just a little note, I believe the neb's and planets are listed alphabetically in the backgrounds pull down list in FRED2, not in the order they are in the .tbl file.
I think this is all correct, feel free to correct if I'm wrong.

Yup. But they also get sorted by Bitmap and BitmapX (without alpha blending). So alphabetical listing of all Bitmap's and then an alphabetical listing of BitmapX's.

And, Weyoun, do not forget about this alpha layer stuff, it's very important! Those colors Tar just mentioned (the black and the green) have to exactly match the ones you will find on the original files. They are set as transparency infos in the game.
For example, if the green you used is 0, 254, 0, (the original, as Tar said, is 0, 255, 0), you will have a green square around your planet.
Unless you have a good explanation for this in the storyline, that would look pretty weird!

No he doesn't. Great Whites have five rows of teeth which drop out with some regularity, but new ones grow and are pushed forward. It's perfectly normal for your shark's teeth to fall out.

Yeah but he's not going to impress the girls at a party if while he's talking a tooth falls out into his drink!
