ATTN: Get your input into the new FreeSpace 2 Engine- FreeSpace Forever

An Open Source Project to design a new engine for FreeSpace 2 has begun.. currently we're publically brainstorming

general brainstorming: http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=114820

Ideas for POF Version 3000 (FS2=2117)
[some things applicable to TBP already in there]
http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=114850

Player controlled beams, beam effective range (ie. only does max damage to a certain distance), I think someone mentioned running lights, alternate mission ending methods (triggerable or toggleable). More control over ambient lighting, sun colors, etc.

Definable warp.pof's

Procedural textures is probably a bit much...but add it to the shopping list.

If you can pull this off...that'll be pretty impressive....but I have my doubts. Nonetheless, good luck.

I'm not going to say add this add that, but instead:

If you can put the best abilities and features of I-War2, I've Found Her B5 Freeware and Freespace2 engines into one neat engine, I'll be more than surprised.

I already suggested of contacting IFH-team and asking for help, they have experience.

Good luck!

Yeah... And absolutely every ship needs gasoline. You ought to make a pit stop on battle at least once. Or in team dogfight you could destroy enemy's gas station

I guess he means an engine that uses FS2 files, TBL files, POF files ANI files and so on, in the same way that the original FS2 engine does, only with more functionality.
It does actually sound very possible, and I think it's a great idea.

Wish list:

support for advanced models - perhaps called "POF2", allowing animating and shape-morphing models.

The ability to script events more effectively, and the ability to use a specific model to allow a more B5 like hyperspace effect.

Allow the use of animated textures and backgrounds.

Luminosity and specularity maps.

Support for bump-mapping, HT&L, compressed textures, etc.

I'm guessing the new engine merely replaces the old 3D graphics engine with a new one, so that it now has support for advanced features like bump mapping, multlayer texturing, shading, curve/smoothing, specular and lighting.

This way people can make good use of their new video cards and systems, which are now considereably better than the what was required for Fs2 originally.

This would help the modding community create models that look better than the ones in Independence War II

I doubt they are changing the gameplay at all...such as newtonian engine and alternate ending thing-a-majiggy... Althought that sounds dandy too.
