Volition heads off into space for its sophomore PS2 title with Red Faction, a first-person shooter set in the future. Players will assume the role of Parker, a worker in mines beneath the surface of Mars that are run by the Ultor Corporation. Inhuman living conditions and a disease called the Plague that suddenly sweeps through their ranks lead the workers to start a rebellion against Ultor. As Parker, players will have to stay alive long enough to bring down Ultor and solve the mystery of the Plague. To reach that goal, players will travel from the subterranean mines to Ultor's science and nanotech labs, to the surface of Mars and satellites orbiting the planet. Along the way, players will have to make use of, and in some cases commandeer, a variety of land, sea, and air vehicles to help them along their journey.
The game sports detailed graphics, especially on the weapons, and some very cool weapon effects. It looks to offer standard FPS gameplay, but what Volition hopes will set the title apart from the rest of the FPS pack is its use of Geo-Mod technology--a real-time, geometry feature the company has developed that allows players to deform the environment on the fly. Aside from creating cool visuals, the feature will dramatically impacts how players proceed through the game. Locked doors and barriers will no longer be an impediment to players, as many will be able to be blown away. A variety of weapons will deform the environment in addition to ventilating any foes unlucky enough to get in Parker's sights.
The build we played was still rough and the frame rate was spotty, but the deformable environments were cool. However, there were some limits on what could be deformed. For example, any environment alterations that could negatively affect gameplay, such as blasting away the floor Parker is standing on, were nixed. The weapons offered nice touches such as visible ammo counters and infrared scopes that showed enemy heat signatures through walls. We were able to see the submarine, airship, and miner vehicles in action briefly, and they all looked to offer a nice change of pace from running through cramped corridors. Gamers intrigued by the idea of destroying their environment can look for Red Faction in winter 2001.
