I suppose that depends on the number of ships that can be put on screen and if the team will actually develop battle groups realistically or only as seen in B5.
If they were to develop it more realistically, patrols and minimal groups may have a variety of Cruisers and Destroyers. A Battle group though is larger; it has as a command and control center a Carrier where all missions are planned and coordinated while also launching the fighter strike forces from the Carrier. This group will also have a few Dreadnoughts or Battleships which of course are the muscle. Cruisers will be the most abundant class of ship while just after that the Destroyers will be the second most numerous. You will also find Frigates and Corvettes (or their respective counterparts) and Submarines, usually 2-3. Specialty ships such as hospital ships, a large Freighter (Carrying tanks, parts, etc) or Assault ships (carrying troops for ground combat or invasions), Tenders (Ships who repair other cap ships) and Missile Cruisers or Destroyers will also be found here. It also depends heavily on the mission of the Battle Group. If it is a defensive group or a strike group, and any other particulars on the missions the group will be carrying out; patrols, rescue and evacuations of civilians, strike and invasion into enemy territories, etc. All of this will determine what you will see in the group. Then come Task Forces, these are usually made up of 3 Battle Groups and their respective ships. Then come fleets and finally Armadas.
But as for what you will always find in the Battle Group; Cruisers, Destroyers, Frigates and Corvettes, Submarines, Battleships or Dreadnoughts and a Carrier as command ship. A B5 Battle Group though I have no idea, B5 didn't have that much variety of ships per race in the series, usually about 2 major ships per race. I suppose a B5 Battle Group might be a combination of Cruisers and Destroyers with a Dreadnought or two and since non-canon ships will appear eventually, the TBP team may actually make the Groups more realistically becuase of having more variety in classes such as Carriers and such. Personally, I'd love to see amore realistic Battle Group but again it depends on the game's threshold and what the team wants.

unfortunately you don't find battleships in Battle Groups anymore. All US Iowa-class battleships have been mothballed since the 1991 Persian Gulf War. I believe the French may have 1 or 2 old World War 2 era battleships left, but these are training ships last I heard (about 20yrs ago) and due to the extreme cost of operating a battleship they are probably no longer used. In essence, battleships cost more then they are worth in todays navies.

I know Battleships don't exist anymore but they might in terms of the future. It may be unlikely but it may happen in B5 terms.

For example :
A small Centauri Battlegroup consists of
- a Primus
- half a dozen Vorchan on escort
The Vorchan Attack-Cruisers engage enemy capital ships with their heavy Ion Cannons ( as seen in season 5 )
The Primus serves as Carrier ( Sentris and Rutharians ) and its countless cannons provide long range AA-cover and additional firepower against all types of targets.
Thats a very clear tactic : Vorchans against big capital ships , Primus and flight complement against everything else.
TBP campaigns won't just throw lots of hardware into big furballs , we will also see battle tactics and strategies , along with dense mission chatter supposed to create the unique ingame atmosphere you more decently know from our first release.

whats realy on "fashion" now are large multipurpose ships.
These conbine may aspects of other class types and also serve as a command post.
Theyre fairly large, my tiny country has only 3 high-tech frigates (14 others are older and with 20 or more years of service)
and despite our limited resourses to sustain a credible navy we're going to build one of these ships.
Theire 160 m long and have a displacement of about 10000 tonnes, thats half the size of a Nimitz class carrier and 1/8 of its total displacement. They can carry 1500 troops and they carry theire own aircraft .(helicopters or gunships but theoricaly they could carry the harrier or the new JSF/B) They also carry their own landing amphibious craft and have a garage capable of carrying tanks. This ship will be a mobile command post for any southwest european fleet. When not performing any nato duty well be using it in theaters of operations like bosnia or Timor.
The filosophy is if you cannot afford a a hole fleet lets pack a bit of everything into one ship. Its one mini task force inside one basket. And at the sime time be able to deploy and have dissuasion influence in a large area.(portugal has a sea territory as big as france germany and england put together)
If it was already oparational we would probably have it commanding the european fleet taking action agains afeghanistan.
If you wanna check its specs:
http://www.marinha.pt/gab_cema/navpol/caracteristicas.html

unfortunatly it dosnt have an english version... so youll probably have to see what words are similar in english.

I would have thought that the HMS Ocean at 208m and 21500 tonnes or one of the HMS Invincible, the HMS Illustrious or the HMS Ark Royal at 208m and 20000 tonnes are doing a good job between them at leading the European Navy.
See the HMS Invincible at: http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/uk/newsid_316000/316507.stm
Of course the Nimitz carriers are the big mothers of all , weighing in at 333m long and 95000 tonnes.

The british carriers were meant for combat only, this multipurpose logistic and command ship has a large room for military and political leadres surrounded by plasma screens and satelite uplinks of the kind we only see in american moovies, as far as i know those british vessels were never meant to have such a specialization.
