I'm not sure what you mean when you say back up, and I anit got a clue on how to edit the thingi whatever you called it.

Find a file called 'ships.tbl'. (...data/tables if I remember correctly)
Open it with NotePad, WordPad (for example... pretty much ewerything works)
There you can find all the ships you can use in the game. When you read it you should figure how it works...
You should make a copy of your ships.tbl . So when you screw up, or want your original tbl file, you have a backup somewhere...
Ofcourse you will need the original ships.tbl as well as the one with B5 ships...
