Red Faction Watch: Reviews: Lots of them!

Posted by Alphakiller:

Yeah...it seems like everyone and their neighbor wants to review the Red Faction PC demo. Here's the highlights.

At Silent Gaming some guy reviewed the multiplayer demo, with the single player mentioned as an aside. I hereby award this guy the Official Smart Ass Reviewer Award. He's pretty solid on multiplayer, but doesn't think much of single, and don't ask me why, he doesn't actually explain other than, and I quote, "Given the blowing up stuff was the sales pitch, what else is left? Well, that's pretty much it. It's probably gonna have a cool story" ... wow. Let's hear it for rating a game's story before you actually play more than about 3% of it! Give me a break. ... it's an opinion with no fact to back it up. I mean, disliking the game, sure. But back it up with something more than "I don't know what else the game has to offer, but I'll just assume it's nothing." However, after clicking the thumbnail picture to the right side of the review, I figured it all out, so no worries. If you want to know what the heck I'm talking about, look no further than this link.

Next up is the site IceCubed where the helpful webmaster icest0rm clued us into the two reviews his site has put up, one for the single player demo, one for the multiplayer test. Single player first, so here we go!
The reviewer, Jedistorm, is at the opposite end of the spectrum from the guy above, since instead of assuming it's "UT where you can blow up walls" he says "You can't just play this game once or twice, and then conjure material for a review. There is a lot to cover, because this game covers a whole lot. I can only think of one adjective: juicy. Yes, juicy. The game is packed with juicy stuff: gameplay, storyline, graphics, sound, music, fun factor, maps, options, weapons, goodies, effects, need I say more?" ... of course, then he compares it to the Russian Revolution, which is an understandable connection, except it's not true, but I admit the similarities are there. Anyway, he's psyched on the game, he mentions how even the menu is cleanly laid out and well done, and it doesn't go downhill from there. He hits how darn cool the geo-mod system is in the glass-house level, the detail of textures, the layout, gameplay, all that. Total score? a perfect 5 out of 5 cubes which is, unsurprisingly enough, their rating mark. For the whole deal, click.

Next, multiplayer review, from the same guy. He points out how he was pinging kinda high, a whopping 150. I wish I could say that was "high" for me...haha. Anyway, it's more of 'this is what people were doing' rather than info about the maps themselves, except he does point out how it's exceptionally fun to get a rail driver and an enhanced damage powerup and go sniping. There are some other issues he pointed out - he couldn't see people at really long range, but he could hear them, and he liked how you can hear people directly above or below you. Anyway, he gave the multiplayer test a 3.5 out of 5 cubes ... he liked the basic concept, but thought it needed more polish, is what I was getting from his review. Anyway, read!
