i jumped at the last possible sec nothing was sacrificed to save me - anything that died was going to die - if that deimos cruier had gotten its act to gether abit sooner it would have gotten out too

Yeah... but knowing what lay ahead (reconstruction, depression, mourning, etc) the pilot decided to show the Shivans that we are not a species that will give up, and fought to the bitter end. Then was declared a Hero.
