In B5 will I be able to...

Fly sideways, doing those great strafing runs and flipping by ship thu 180 then blasting the engines sending me screaming forwards? Only I had a go at this my self, the fs2 engine didn't like it You can get a ship to fly sideways and backwards, sort of. I got a ship going backwards, shivan ships do go sideways but they all still "grip" space. And if you turn the "grip" down to a min you get some very wierd affects.

I've been keeping half an eye on this place for a long time, you seem to have all the ships made and I was wonering if this was holding you back?

Any more info would be great, I miss b5 now it's not on my TV and an fs2/b5 mod seems the purfect cure

Sliding is probably a no. It makes it more difficult to evade weapons fire (because your ship is still flying in the same direction for a bit and therefore they get a good lock on you) and the engine really isn't setup to control that sort of physics.

If we go ahold of the source code, that would be a huge thing that we'd want to do.

How dare Interplay! They give us an inkling of hope, and then leave us dry!

Why can't they atleast have someone say:

"They haven't gotten around to it."

or

"They said 'no'."

Either would be sufficient. For a little while atleast.

LAMBO brings up a good point. How much more work would be required if you did get the source code?

Well considering half of you are expecting the impossible, the code would at least facilitate near impossible

Don't worry...we're on track for the demo release which will mark the beginning of the pack releases.

The Demo is pretty much the core files for the game. There will be upgrades but once the demo is out, it'll be a more open development process. We might even just make individual ships available to those who really really want to tinker and get them in the game by themselves and release packs later.

So the demo will mark the begining of some more open ended releases. It'll also mean you'll be in on new interfaces, art packages, and a whole lot more.

I hope board members create tons of great missions and campaigns, i hate making them, and playing them knowing what will happen. Also i hope this site hosts a little space where people can post their own Babylon Project missions and campaigns.

It is still a long way to the campaigns.
I hope I'll see some cool ones made by users !
The "official" campaigns from the mod team will have video and speech.

Perhaps we could even make the following :
When you have made a campaign and we think it is REALLY good the development team might decide to upgrade it with speech and video !
So, if you are a good storywriter you will have the team behind you !

Other small campaigns and the so called "historical missions" will be available as well, though.

But I have to say in general it is too early to talk about campaigns. Not a single mission is made, but some of our team-members are already writing storyboards.

What you can expect from the TBP campaigns:
We all have fair experience with space combat sims and the official TBP-campaigns won't just incite pointless battle events with hundreds of ships and anonymous pilots in their fighters, our campaigns will have stunning and detailed plots with complex characters.
The campaigns have different designers, but the atmosphere in our CivilWar campaign won't be as anonymous as the FS2 main campaign.

Whatever it will be in the end , STORYBOARD writing has become one of my main concerns and I won't allow boring stuff to happen.

If you released individual ships would they could with their own .tbl entry so all you had to do was add it to the standard one or would that table editing stuff have to be done manually? There's no way I could write out an entire table entry for a ship from scratch.

I never write table entries from scratch either

Yeah, it would have the whole package. But you would have to copy and paste it to the right area. We'll see how things progress and how we release things. Definately the packs are what most users are going to want.

There is one major campaign and several minor campaigns planned by the team so far. I'm going to do whats called "Historic Battles" and take some of the battles from B5 and recreate them to the best of my ability.

Ice, I hope you don't mean that newbies have to do all that copy-pasting think.

They just want to play, there might be even players who just bought their copy of FS2 and now they are trying this mod.

So let's make this one good, ok?

Hey! When I make tbl files, I usually copy one of a ship of similar size, and then hack the hell out of it.

It's not a newbie thing, it saves time...

ok i know kazan is wanting to release everything in vp files and this would be great if we released everything all at once, but as we are releasing in parts its not going to be that simple.....i suggest we use simple zips ....ie unzip to freespace 2/data then the zips copies to the relevant sub folders....this way we can add files and update the tbl's in reletively small update zips. And to make things even easier we should only have 1 file to download for the first pack release...that includes everything....i doubt anyone only wants parts of the mod...everyone wants everything.....complaining that the download is too big is silly for two reasons:

1) it is always going to be big if you want the real deal from us

2) programs can be used to segment downloading so it isnt a problem anyway...people who cant be bothered to get these small free packages dont really have an excuse not to

basically the main file is going to be the first file....the rest would be relatively small in comparison. So if my one file strategy is not welcome...then we have 2, one is the full version (as above) the other is CORE files only...at the moment this is debatable as to what would be removed.....things like interface and music would be straight out of the window....both versions of the main download would be compatible with the updates.....so the CORE smaller version would suffice
