EAS B5 progress
No screenshots yet. Expect some soon.
As everyone knows I already have a 100% complete Babylon 5 model so this final stage consists only of touching up the geometry and texturing.
Here is the news:
- I have changed to 32 face cylinders. The 24 face cylinders used in the screen shots looked too square up close. This has resulted in a poly count increase but was necessary. 32 is the bear minimum number of faces which makes looks passable.
- The rotating part of the station (including fly-in docking bay) is now fully converted and textured. It looks awesome.
- I spent 6 hours yesterday working on my model's forward superstructure. IMHO this part was the only part which was far better on Wingnut's model. Mine is now on par with Wingnut's and Dean Scott's. Wingnut is a great modeller. It's only when you get down to the details that you appreciate just how great.
- Work is progressing on the remainder of the superstructure, texturing as I go. The end is still 1-2 weeks off depending on free time but the in sight.
- The final model will probably be closer to 2.5K polygons. But with graphics cards increasing in speed all the time this shouldn't be a problem. In the mean time people can knock the detail level down on missions involving the station. It's a small price to play for having an accurate and poly efficient representation of "tne place to be".

Also with LOD's, we can probably make LOD1 only a small decrease in looks over LOD0. Like the 24 faces thing perhaps. We can tweak it to run quite nicely I hope.
But I think for such a *icon* of a model as B5, its worth it to go to the maximum poly numbers.
BWO's Golgotha is 2100 polys roughly and it runs without problems on my old computer (PII 233) so im not too worried. If anything, its fill rates that are going to slow you down.

I just cant wait to see it fully finsihed, tbl setup and everything....rotating in space...by backgrounds setup behind it....its gonna look seriously awesome.....i made a slightly better epsilon nebula too...just slightly bigger - so close up is better
btw ice..i got a way round the PSP7 thing...i just alter my date back when i use it...and correct it when im done....so i'll be ok....also SKullar has a ful proof method of fixing the trial time to zero...so i can do that too if i wish...

No! Don't put cracks on the VWBB, or the topics get owned!

I think so. 24 faces looks fine from even a small distance away. It's just when you get right on top of the thing that it looks bad.

OK , folks , here is the method.
It is nothing special , I wonder why you don't know it .
1. goto DOS prompt
2. type in : REGEDIT
3. goto HKEY_CURRENT_USER
4. and to SOFTWARE
5. Delete the JASC entry
6. Then you can uninstall PSP7
7. Shut down system
8. boot up again
9. install PSP7
10. You will see your evaluation period is at its first day again.

have you tryed making the section out of triangles
I don't mean like
__________
|\........|\........|

|____\|____\|
I mean like

not sure how it will look for a cylindrical section but it should be fine if you smooth shade it, and it reduces the polycount while smoothing it out.

I was here then I wasn't, now I'm dead

I've considered it and will certainly be giving it a try at a later time. I've found this technique pretty hit and miss in the past. Works great for spheres (obviously) but not always for cylinders.
