Well hello there
Do you mean making new sounds or altering the originals?
Well, they are only WAWs...

Arf ! Prophet thinking he's the experienced one, *chuckles* Fuzzy is an old friend of the babylon project
How's it going fuzzy? Where have you been ?
Anyway about your question you should be more specific...you can add new sounds simply with microphone and sound recorder although i doubt they would be good. I suspect you mean a proper sound editor like sound forge...dunno about that...ask IceFire as hes doing sound

I've been using GoldWave (www.goldwave.com I think) shareware. Quite useful.
FreeSpace 2 sounds are all wav files. Most are compressed into Microsoft ADPCM format some aren't. Varying bit rates are used depending on the sound.

I've been working hard on my movie. Thinking of using Freespace sounds instead of making all my own. Running low on time and man power...

Actually all I want to do is use the sounds. All the data folders apear to be empty, though I must assumb they are not... looking for a "show all" command or something. If they're just wavs I don't even need an editor...

Haha now your talking.....you need a program called "vpview32" if you look in the main directory of freespace you'll see a load on files of vp nature...these are packs with all the datd pacled in them....kind of like a zip file....once you have vpview32 you can access the files and extract the wavs....i think theyre in sparky file...i think you can get vpview from one of these areas

i wish people would stop saying this.. VPs are nothing like a zip.. firstoff they're not compressed.
VP have three parts in the following order: File Header [16 bytes][Actual Binary Contents of all files in Package][Simple File Allocation Table [44 bytes/entry]]

Cptwhite is right, for the un-programmingly elite...or whatever, zip file is a close enough aproximation. Its just an archive and it keeps things simple. Simple is good Kazan.

And .zip-files don't need necessarily be compressed, the filetype supports non-compressed archives.
