Trail opacity - Which Alpha is right for me?

Yo, Yo! I am making a mod for fs2 that includes a fighter version of the beam cannon. It works great, but the trail effects are crappy. I have been playing around with the alpha settings, and I figured that was the problem. If it's too low (0.1) I get something that looks like flat shaded polygons. If higher (1.5) I get a shiny effect around the trail. This is really bothering me.

-----------------------------
+Start Width: 2.0
+End Width: 2.0
+Start Alpha: 0.1
+End Alpha: 0.1
+Max Life: 0.2
+Bitmap: beam-red
-----------------------------

Tell me if something is wrong, would ya? I want my trail effect to look like a beam cannon.
