I am the proverbial guy who's been living on Mars for the last 12 months.

BIGTIME INCESTUOUS LOVER OF FS1/FS2. HAPPILY COMPLETED THE GAMES, UNTIL DROPPING OUT OF THE FS2 SCENE ABOUT A YEAR AGO, NEVER DOUBTING THAT FS3 WOULD BE COMING ROUND THE CORNER.

ONLY JUST THIS WEEK, realised nothing's been mentioned, so I start surfing to [url="http://www.Volition-inc.com"]www.Volition-inc.com[/url] / [url="http://www.Interplay.com,"]www.Interplay.com,[/url] nary a mention of any development having progressed, then finding out through sites like this THAT THERE'S PROBABLY NEVER GONNA BE A FS3, GIVEN THAT INTERPLAY DON'T EVEN WANT TO BACK EXPANSION TO FS2.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGH!

So I just signed Jake Logan's petition,
700 people, that's not bad, is it?

I thought these beancounters at corporations are meant to infer that 1 petition results represents xxx people's opinion, so what gives with Interplay not backing FS2/3?

Why does Orange have little faith in the effectiveness of the petition?

What can we do? Surely we can make this happen!

Why does this crap always happen? Space Above and Beyond cancelled, Bablyon 5 cancelled, no follow-up to favourite game of all time.....SORRY FOR FREAKING OUT BUT AS I SAID, I ONLY JUST TWIGGED THIS WEEK AND FEEL VERY UPSET.

Opinions? Counselling?

Orange is the smart one. There will be no FS3 because THQ Owns Volition and Interplay owns the rights to Freespace, there is almost no chance that THQ will buy the rights.

What are you arguing again? You want FS3?? Dude, I probably speak for everyone when I say "who doesn't want an FS3" ?!?

There are several things standing in the way:
1) Interplay owns the rights to the FreeSpace name, and everything related to it. That is usually a stipulation for new companies signing contracts with big publishers so they can get their game published. Last I heard, Volition is owned by THQ, which kinda hurts the cause of developing a game for Interplay.

2) Besides #1 (which is probably the major reason) ... Volition is super busy with other projects such as Summoner and Red Faction. They aren't a super-huge dev house yet, so three games is probably pushing it right now (though I bet they have one or two more they aren't telling anyone about right now)

3) What do you plan on doing? Whining and bitching isn't going to get you anywhere. For that matter, nothing really is because the community doesn't have any power except to voice opinions. Be glad that Volition actually listens ... most dev companies don't.

Like I said, I've not been keeping up with the scene, and I only found this stuff out in the last few days, so I really don't get why you feel compelled to flame me.

I wasn't implying nobody else gave a damn - remember, it's only just lately that I've discovered that Freespace 2.5/3 will probably only ever exist in the form of fan-developed FRED2 missions.

From what I've seen on the freespace2 forum, it seems like the "veteran" community is very hard on people who raise the FS3 issue, or who express their frustration. I can appreciate it looks like old news to you people, but your predictable response does NOTHING to help include the new users into the community.

If I was going to critique you people, then it would go like this: from the kind of posts I've read, aside from flaming newbies and being cliquey, very little of value's actually being discussed or progressed in these forums.

Whining and bitching?? Look to yourself first, matey, cause you're coming across as a conceited know-it-all, and you've just turned one more person away who enjoyed Freespace as much as you, but beyond that, almost certainly has NOTHING in common with you. Myself, I don't care to treat people with a lack of respect when discussing a god-damned computer game.

Why not? Its a great idea... It IS possible that fans could create FS3, just like Silent Threat, right??

i mean, with the new source code release there could (and probably will be) TONS of MODS that could help out with FS3...

Yes I'm new, but FS3 is a great potential, whether if its Volitions/Interplay that creates it or some unknown company or just by fans, its is possible...
