Admiral/ Captain Gloval question from VW Oracle
It is navy tradition to call any officer who is a Captain in rank or higher "Captain" if he/she is currently in command of a ship. So an Admiral would be called captain on his ship, but if he left it he would be called Admiral.
Just thought you'd like to know. That's what I get for reading Horatio Hornblower.

I don't know what it means. Hey Max, you obviously like Robotech, as indicated by your name, and the fact that you're doing the Robotech-->FS2 mod, but I've been wondering; did you watch the Robotech anime or did you read the novels by Jack McKinney? I saw the anime once or twice, but for the most part I read the novels. I just finished #7, Southern Cross.

I watched the series. Many times. I have some novels but I am sooooooooooo afraid to read them because they would probably shatter my naive imagination of what Robotech is from the series.

I liked the books.
I read all of them except Sentinels #4. I could never, ever find it.

Well, they're by no means bad, but I can't compare them to the anime since I've almost never seen it. One of my friends has the whole thing(what was released in America, anyway); I'm gonna borrow it from him and watch it over the weekend. I can give you a comparison then if you want.

I've read, as I said, up to Southern Cross, and I have the next five on reserve at my library. They don't have Sentinels #1 tho(both copies[two copies in 47 branches of the library, damn s] were lost), boy am I .

Another interesting fact is that in some navies (What Max is talking about holds true in the RN and USN, I'm not sure about others) there can only be one Captain on a ship. Therefore, let's say you have a Lt. Commander commanding ship, called Captain, because they captain the ship. (That's where it came from, if you cared)
Then someone with the rank Captain comes on-board. To avoid any confusion, they get an honorary promotion (to Major or whatnot if they're Air Force, etc) while on the ship so only one person gets called Captain.

Interesting bit of info, Alphakiller. Where'd you get it? Also, what do you mean by RN and USN? I've heard USN used before, but it was in reference to a faction in the PS-X game Front Mission 3; it referred to the nation-state formed of both American continents.

Right - Front Mission's United States of the New Continent or whatever.
USN = United States Navy
RN = Royal Navy (e.g. Great Britain's royal navy.)

Of course, usually nobody with a rank higher than Captain commands a single vessel; Commodores (a USN rank only used in war, think of it as a 1-star) and various Admirals command at the minimum a patrol or something of multiple vessels...
