Keyboard and Mouse Problems with FS1

I looked through the FS forums and couldn't find any clear cut solution to this so I'm going to ask anyway. I'm a newbie so if I did miss anything just point me in the right direction.

I just got the Freespace/Silent Threat bundle a few days ago. At random intervals in the game (lobby, options, actual gameplay, etc.), the keyboard just locks up for no reason. The gameplay goes on while I'm furiously pounding my keyboard like crazy. Same with the mouse too; in the options/briefing, etc., the game won't respond to anything I click on at random. The 1.06 patch is installed if you guys need to know that. Here are my system specs:

1.5 Ghz Pentium 4 processor
512 MB RAM
64MB GeForce2
Windows ME

Thanks a lot guys.

Did you install the patch before installing Silent threat? If so it's gone back down to v1.04. Re-patch to 1.06 and try again.

Okay, I just tried that karajorma. It didn't work. Is there anything else that could be conflicting with it?

I'm at a bit of a loss then. Don't remember seeing any similar problems (maybe a search here and on HLP would be a good idea)

I'm assuming you've checked that you have the latest drivers for everything.

I've had the exact same problem. The one thing we both have in common is that we use Windows ME. It doesn't give me problems with any other games but maybe it effects this one. Believe it or not I'm on the last mission of the original game - I've just suffered through the problem because I like it so much. I have always used the Saitek X45 while playing and if I switch the modes a couple of times control will normally come back to me (or it will occasionally completely lock-up). I have tried using other devices but the keyboard lockups still occur without any way out at that point. I'm not sure I can make it through Silent Threat with this still going on.

Don't even bother with Silent Threat... You'll hate it...

Try compatability mode on the file named FS.exe... NOT FreeSpace.exe, thats the launcher, only on FS.exe... change it to 98 or so...

We are running Windows ME. Going to XP is not an option. This is the only game that has given me problems like this. Why would I hate Silent Threat?

Quite frankly Silent Threat isn't very good. I've played user made campaigns which show a better grasp of the FS1 universe and which have better plots and missions (The final mission of Silent Threat is especially dreadful).

Do you have FS2? FS1 has been ported over to FS2. It feels a little different there but you should at least be able to play it without having to worry about keyboard problems

I have the exact same problem too. I'm also using Windows ME (coincidence?). My mouse locks up in the main menu and sometimes in game, with the music running in the background, but I cannot press anything, not on the keyboard nor on the mouse. I have also tried to update the game to several versions but to no avail.

I have done a little experimentation and found out it has nothing to do with keyboard, but more with the type of mouse you may have. When I had those lockups, I removed the mouse from its USB port and the game resumed working for about 5 more minutes, then halted again when I reinserted the mouse. Since the mouse is a requirement in the game, I couldn't do much but to stare at the screen helplessley. I have tried 2 different mice and 2 different keyboards but again to no avail.

This leaves only 1 thing possible. Perhaps it is related to a certain graphics card we may have, I have a GeForce 2 64MB - just like Draco Strife has. Who knows, maybe older drivers or older DirectX versions should be used. I haven't tried these however, so don't take my word for it.

Hopefully someone can come up with a solution for this, I doubt it though. I'm totally stumped here, and this problem has been like that for 2 years on my computer. Luckily, I played it on my friend's computer so at least I experienced it before. This is not ideal however, as Freespace is one of the very few games that cannot actually work properly on my computer.

P.S. Should I just download the v2.3 port zip file (12.8 MB) or do I need to get the FS1 Media files (CBANI's, Voice files) as well in order for it to work properly?

I've not actually tried the port so I can't advise much there. The port has it's own forum and they'll probably be a stickied thread explaining what you need in it.

Well, if you don't have this sorted out yet, you may think about heading to [url=www.3dap.com/hlp]HLP[/qul], since to our misfortune, VW is going down...
