Future of Freespace....
Well - we have the campaigns being made, mods in the making - and a few TC's knocking around, I'd like to know where you think the Freespace saga will be in one year...

I have a question...
Interplay own the name of Freespace, but Volition own the game code, artwork and ship designs, so could Volition release a Freespace sequel under a different name?
(The first Freespace game was called Descent:Freespace, but over here (UK) it's called Conflict:Freespace). Could they do something like that (but without the Freespace name)?

Welcome to the Volition Watch BB (VWBB)!!
I don't think Volition could do that, because Interplay owns the intelectual rights to the game, meaning you can't copy the game in any way, shape or form. THQ, Volition's new and hopefully elite (l33t) publisher, will buy the rights from Interjerks, so that V can make a FS3.

I have a feeling the freespace comunity will just slowly die out. With one site after another closing down, once every week. The VBB FS2 forum start slowing down to the Tech support forum speed. We'll all forget about FS3. We will hear no other remarks from the developpers except that FS3 is scrap. And, the long legacy of FS will be dead. No more Campaigns, missions, online games, nothing. Even somesites will be torn down to make place for the new. And FS will be forgotten, for most of us.
Maybe not i a year but you get the idea.

It's a bleak picture, but I'm forced to agree at this stage (unless they announce FS3, I imagine the community shifting into something new like Freelancer etc....)

Shadow: ...as is happening to Descent 1 and 2, especially D1. D2 has very few pages on the 'net about it now. And D1 has practically none.

I already thought of something like this, so I decided to make a big project to keep FreeSpace 2 alive. You all know Counterstrike and all the other great mods saving Halflife from that fate, right? Well, I want to make a Star Wars total conversion. Look at my topic in this forum (I forgot the link).

Freelancer!?! Don't you mean Starlancer?
STARLANCER!?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I do not want to live in a world where starlancer replaces FS.

FS2 should have replaced Starlancer.
Anyway, with 3 new sites going up (FSZone, Descentral, FS Station) and innumerable campaigns/MODs/MODed campaigns in the works, i think FS2 has at least a year and a half of life left in it. That's a minimum.
I'd say the longest it could hold out with any respectable amount of strength would be 3 years, maybe 3 yrs 4 months, unless a massive revival effort kicks in sometime in the middle.

Oh come on people!! FSW receives roughly 600,000 hits a month. Imagine that! GFS only got about 30k a month. We closed simply because we did not have a reliable server. Had we, we'd still be open. So, I closed GFS, and am giving my talents to VW. You are all losing interest because nothing new is happening. Volition created a great game, and we have an awesome community. When hell freezes over, this community will die.
There are still many sites and many people that are active. FS Zone will open soon, and Joey21 is making new campaigns. Ultimately, we decide if FS3 is made or not. Let the community die, don't expect it. Keep it alive, bug THQ, show you want it, then expect FS3. Hell, there are over 4,000 people on the VBB, isn't that VOICE enough?

IMO, I believe that Interplay would be willing to sell the FS rights because not only did FS2 not sell as well as it should, but if Interplay were to make a FS3 themselves, they'd have to make it completely from scratch, because Volition own the copyrights on the game code, artwork, and I think the ship models as well, so I dont think they'd be willing to develop a sequel from scratch.
Unless...(shivers at this next idea)
Volition let Interplay use their code

Jennings put it very nicely. I agree with him. If there's no FS3, then I think the FS will eventually die out. Well said, Jennings

Jennings actually inspired me a bit there, enough to make me want to fly to Interplays offices and point a large gun at their CO's head untill they sold me the rights to FS, which I could then give to V

What most people aren´t aware of is the fact, that the community is concentrated on a few sites. See, there is no (absolutely no) German community of FS2 and I think there aren´t any other communites like this for FS2. If you take Halflfie for example, you can get over 200 German halflife sites, but not one German FS2 site. I´d start a German site, but there´s not enough interest. Even my RL friends don´t like FreeSpace 2...

Heh good point.... the thing is i dont know any german except for "guten tag", "ja", and "nein"
I'm pretty sure that's the case with most of the FS2 community too.
A german version of the site would be cool but if there is gonna be a german version, plz make an english one too.
