You can use FRED to create your own missions like in Vanilla FreeSpace 2. In it you can also choose to fly any fighters you want to.

I'd say he was after some kind of random mission generator by the looks of things... Hmmm... I wonder if this is a realistic expectation for the SCP? You wouldn't be able to put particularly complex missions in there of course, but you could do some archetypes
- Defend the Capship from bombers/Asteroids
- Bomb the capship out of existence
- Dogfight around an (evacuating?) Insxtallation
etc.
Then, by allowing the player to set the difficulty, either through a set of Preset groupings, (easy, medium, hard) and/or by allowing the specifics to be edited (Reinforcements, yes/No, hostile ship quality (Poor (Ulyssees), Average (Myrmidon), Good (Erinyes)) Hostile/Friendly Species etc. etc. you could possibly get through some of the packing for the mission. A set of tables could define what each change means. Ie. You're defending a capship. You set the overall difficulty to define if that capship is a Cruiser (Hard) Corvette (Medium) Or Destroyer (Easy). You set the Friendly species to decide whether it's a Mekhu/Lillith/Leviathan etc. You could also pick stuff like Full nebula, and the activity, or even set your mission in subspace
You could use the premade nebula background missions lightspeed's shipping with his nebulae these days for the Background, and finally, by creating about a half dozen messages for certain predictable scenarios, like Hostile/Friendly Capship arrival ("The $F has arrived from subspace! or "The $H has arrived and is moving toweards the convoy"), and combining them with FS2s existing in game messages ("Incoming Jump signiature, Hostile Configuraion") you could get a reasonable (if basic) instant Mission. Wouldn't be a substitute for a true, FREDded mission, but it'd be fun if you just wanted to jump on and kill some shivans.
Of course, it'd probably be a nightmare to code, but hey, we can dream right?

Well, basically it would work if there would be an option in FRED to add a spawn point for "random bomber wing" or "random capital ship". Of course, this is all hypothetic.
At this moment the only best option for skirmish/fast dogfight mission is the Gauntlet.

I was actually thinking about something like that, BW, as an expansion to another idea I had.
I don't want to get anyone excited though, it could turn out to not be viable.
Er, yeah, anyway, it would be possible to make a spawn-random-ship-at-location SEXP. You could specify one of the ship flags for the class, then FS2 would generate a list of all shiptypes with that class and pick a random one from that list.
I'm not sure how accurate the current flags are ATM - as far as I know there's just fighter, bomber, and capital.

Off the top of my head:
Fighter
Bomber
Cruiser
Corvette
Capital
Cargo
Sentrygun
Cargo
Navbuoy
Freighter
Transport (I think)
Escape Pod (Again, I think)
AWACS
There may be more, but I'm fairly sure that's all of them.

Something similar to the XWing Alliance skirmish mode (I think) is what he's asking for.

Yap, something like the X-Wing Alliance Skirmish
I think the Fred is to hard, but very powerfull.
But i need 30 Min to understand to make a capital ship fire beams.

FRED isn't really that hard - it can be daunting at first, but once you get over the initial hurdles (Beams, the basic concepts of sexping etc.) you can make some decent missions fairly quickly, especially these just straight dogfights you seem to want. Plus the Walkthrough that comes with FRED is bloody brilliant.
But I don't want to knock this off topic - I'm very interested in this skirmish mode idea...

FRED indeed aint hard to use and to resemble X-Wing skirmisher wont need much work or training. I think I have beginners FRED tutorial for TBP somewhere around here, maybe you should check on main site at tutorials?

Any half-decent FREDder could throw together a skirmish mission in about 20-30 minutes tops.
The reason why this autogeneration idea sounds cool to me is cause unlike FREDded missions they would be different every time and every campaign would instantly benefit from them

No, it'd make campaigns worse. Generic filler missions are worse than no missions at all, IMO.
Of course, having it as an option outside a main campaign, but with the same custom ships, that's something else.
At least one game I remember - Wing Commander Academy - was basically a skirmish generator. It was fun for about twenty minutes, so you have to keep that in mind

Why are you bringing this issue up in here? Talk about it to SCP devs.
Best solution would probably be a new executable rather than ****load of buggy code added to existing FS2 and FRED2 executables.

Which is of course what I meant
Only an idiot would suggest replacing hand crafted campaign missions with generated ones.
Having the ability to play a TBP or Inferno skirmish on the other hand would instantly add some longevity to the mod after you finish the main campaign
