I have tried out the Demoversion of I-War 2 once. It's even hard just to turn your ship around.
And space battle no fun, if you have to cancentrade harder on flying your ship than aiming at the target.
And the graphics isn't that much better than in TBP.
But if they do something with the ships behavior, it could be quite good.
BTW they made a mistake with the Vorchans weapons. Where the rocket launchers should be, they made a blue laserlike weapon. On TV I never saw Centauri use blue firing weapons (apart from the handweapons).

I-War 2 is the best space sim I ever played. I'll repeat that, SIM. It's not an arcade space shooter like FS2.
Having said that, it took no time to "learn". I mean, you can go anywhere using autopilot, and I've got no trouble if flying actually requires skill. FS2 fighter combat is normally "fly the loop" and aim. On I-War2 combat maneuvers matter, as it should be.
Just get the game and practice a little on Instant Action and you should be fine. You can do everything on the game using your joystick hat, the WASD keys and the F5-F9 keys.
The general consensus on the i-w2 community is that the main campaign is too EASY, saving a couple of missions, that is. Just remember, it uses newton physics with flight assitance, so you don't make 90 degrees turns while flying at 20kps, but that should be a good thing.

In what difficulty level do you play?
Have you tried multiplayer?
Oh... and check the release date of both games... you'll get a nice picture!
FreeSpace may not have newton physics, but it's a hell of a game with a great story that keeps you hooked on it for years and years...

I disagree with -Norbert-'s opinion, but it's just that, an opinion and everyone has their own. I-War2 is a great game and I like IW2's gameplay. It wasn't hard to learn, but it has it's own tricks which can help greatly in fights. Learn to use thruster overrides well.

Ash, I hope you know saying: "Pride goes before the fall"?
Well, true that you're one of top FS2 multiplayers, I agree on that, but in end there is always somebody better. In the end does it really matter? I dont play FS2 multi in hope of winning, I play it in hope of good time (talk of losers, huh?)

Yeah, it's quite neat. I feel like at home in a newtonian sim environment.
Too bad I didn't have time to complete the main campaign, and just recently I even lost the save in my first ever hard drive breakdown. Just as the story started to get off...
And dang, there are no W2k drivers for my old gameport Thrustmaster; the hat doesn't work! I still did thrash one of those big cruisers that can be found around the starting systems. Took a long time and lots of dodging, but that's exactly why it was fun. IIRC, they even had auto-repair, didn't they?

Both FS2 and I-War 2 are good games, speaking of newtonian physics, some of you guys might also like Allegiance (which is free)
graphics are not bad, its a multiplayer only (with training missions)

For those of you who liked I-War it might be worth looking for an Amiga/Atari ST game called Warhead.
It was written by one of the team who went on to write I-War and can be thought of as a precursor to it Personally I think that it was actually better than I-War in several ways but by now I'm sure it looks pretty primative as far as graphics are concerned.

Warhead was a gem. My interest in IW just increased infinitely (from zero).
