starfury flight
Will we be able to fly the starfury backwards? Or will that kind of thing require source code mods...

It's possible without source for you, but the AI can't handle it i think.

Right. And with source code, the AI thinks that it can chase fighters by going sideways. Very messed up right now. I'm sure someone will figure it out.

The engine for FS2 was not built to support anything near the full Newtonian physics we saw on he show. Attempts have been made to replicate some aspects such as sliding and flying backwards (Niether of which I have tried because I'm not real good at this computer stuff.) which reportedly works OK for the player, but really messes with the AI.
I hope that clears some of it up. I understand that there are efforts underway to modify the source code to remedy some of these problems, but it will be a VERY LONG TIME before any of us get to see them in game.

Didn't some of the Shivan fighters use strafing? I think it was the Scorpion..

More sliding than strafing.

sliding, strafing. It's the same side to side movement isn't it?

No...sliding we already do in TBP. You may not notice it but its there...when you corner pretty hard you should notice a slight slide. Strafing as Xaphod pointed out is a direct side to side movement not associated with a turn or forward movement necessarily.
In another example...you are never going to see a modern day F-15 Eagle strafe...on the other hand, it sure is going to start sliding from its path when it makes a turn at a very high angle of attack. They like to do it at air shows...slide into their corners so they can make a box manuver.

You can see this sliding perfectly in "Top Gun". I don't know how it is with other "aircraft-films" but there you see it really good.
And for strafing just install TBP Open 2.0 and edit the table. Somewhere in the Forum is a thread in which is said how. It's cool doing that

If you want to fly a Starfury under Newtonian physics, there is a good mod for I-War 2 that will give you that. Go here for the mod called BUDA 5 (no idea what that stands for). It's not as good as TBP, as there is no campaign for you, but there is true Newtonian physics and the beams work well for the player, at least.
You can probably get around the missions problem and recreate a sort of EA Civil War by replacing the tugs with Starfuries and the destroyers and cruisers with Midwinters and Omegas, respectively (but it will be weird having the Agamemnon referred to as Franklyn Hoffer and having your wingmen called things like 'Monkfish' and 'Sigue Sigue').
This would require a lot of editing of INI files and renaming/merging of packages (they are .zip files, so the tools are readily available), and I simply don't have the persistence to try it out now, so I don't know if it would work. You would also have to slow the ships down, so that you would have a chance to fly alongside an Omega and pelt the side with your pulse cannon before you rocket away, but you may be able to recreate that nice cinematic feeling with I-War 2.
I don't mean this to say that TBP is lacking. Nothing like that. I-War 2 could just be a simple stopgap to give people the chance to strafe in a Starfury.
On a side note, is there going to be any other way to get TBP 2.0? I simply can't download a 200MB file!

Theres just a little problem.
Have you ever played I-War2 with a FreeSpace 2 CD?
And from the demoversion I know that the flightmodel in I-War 2 is a little too realistic (at least for me). And even with this totally realistic physics (or better to say due to the realism) its unlikely to fly a starfury like in the show.
