No Beams
None of the beams in my game seem to be working. I was playing "staring into the Abyss" and when to Omega-X is supposed to open fire nothing happens. I extracted the mission and check the events in Fred and everything checked out. Then I made a mission that had every imaginable beam related Sexp used at some point and nothing. THen I got the TBP_Open2.0 used the cheats to arm my fighter with beams. They worked fine. But still no beams on the bigger ships.
Anyone got any ideas whats up?

When you say every imagniable beam related sexp...you mean, beam-free tied with a has-arrived-delay event?

No, actually. I created a mission start event:
When-has-arrived
Alpha 1
do-nothing
Then I used the beam free, and a seperate event that used the fire-beam sexp.

I don't understand...a mission start event is pretty irrelevant in most cases (and this one doesn't work, I'll explain in a moment).
The beam free event must take place after the ship has entered the area. Even if its already present at 0 seconds, its best to delay for a second or two (and in which case, use a time elapsed event rather than has-arrived).
The trigger for Alpha 1 entering the area will not trigger because Alpha 1 never does enter the area. Alpha 1 is already (and always) present. So if you do have triggers chained or relying on that one being true before something is going to activate...they will not work.
Forgive me if I'm not answering the question, but I have so little to work with

No problem Icefire. I welcome anything that helps me understand this stuff.
I am a bit confused. You say a mission start event shouldn't work but I have made a few other missions, and nothing ever works for me unless I put a mission start in. I dont know maybe im just not cut out for this...

Icefire is right in saying that When-has-arrived Alpha 1 doesn't work though.
A more correct way of doing a mission start event would be When-has-time-elapsed 1 - the 1 is just to be on the safe side.
EDIT - yeah.. I know.. I'm just reiterating what Icefire has just said.

Its not that your not cut out for this...its just that you have to learn the quirks of how FRED works and you have to think logically about how the events are triggered.
I'm not sure what your mission start event is helping you with. Start there and work your way up. What are you trying to do and what isn't working for you? Have you looked at any of the missions that came with TBP (r1 or r2) or any of the missions out in the community? That should give you a VERY clear indication on how to do the basics.

Actually, Ice.. from what he says:
I was playing "staring into the Abyss" and when to Omega-X is supposed to open fire nothing happens. I extracted the mission and check the events in Fred and everything checked out
it seems like he's saying that the beams don't work at all, ever, rather than saying that he doesn't know how to make them work in a mission.
If that's the case mewgen1, do beams work in regular FS2?

I dont really know Xaphod. I haven't played normal FS2 in... oh, must be almost 5 months now. And I did a clean install of it for TBP2, so anyhting I might remember from then is meaningless.
Regardless, I was fidling around with my video card settings and low and behold the beams started working all of a sudden. Not sure what I did, it doesn't seem like the video card should really have anyhting to so with this.
Anyways now that this crisis is resolved I will let you all get back to whatever you were doing before. Sorry for taking up your time.
PS Icefire: After I got the beams working again I found that the ones in the mission I was making still dont work, so I tried your suggestion and it fixed that problem to, so Thank You!! I guess I will just have to apply myself harder in the future.
