fs2 crashes

Hello all! It's been a long time since I came here, I'm happy to see that the community is still here

I have a problem with fs2... The game is crashing in various ways not long after the beginning of a mission, which is weird since it used to work like a charm before.

Sometimes, the cursed blue screen do its infamous job (appearing suddenly, just at the WRONG moment, dammit!)

Or the game simply send me back to the desktop, with an error message or not. When there is an error message, it mentions the windows kernell32 dll file, but I suspect this is not the source of the problem.

My machine, while being quite old now, is still more than a treat to fs2

PIII 600
geforce 256
512 M sdram
aureal A3D soundcard (which is responsible for a lot of troubles in various applications. Piece of trash, it is...)

It would be extremely kind of you to give me some help if you can.
If you need more informations, just ask!

Thanks a lot

Are you actually using the Aureal sound? If so, turn it off.

No, I disabled it both in the game setup interface and in the main device manager (hardware acceleration feature is disabled). This soundcard is definitely not working properly, that's for sure

I installed once the Derelict campaign. Could it be a problem?

check the configuration, and then rip your sound card completely out of the computer and reboot. see if it happens again

To rip my soundcard? This machine's a grandma, don't you dare stilling goods from old people, you monster!

Aw, come on, there's got to be another way! I tried a lot of things, except re-installing older drivers. They are not easy to find now, so I'm still looking for them.

Oh, I know! I'll buy a new machine! Weeeee!

That thing reminds me of my old piece of junk. (ive gotten a newer vaiety of junk by the way)

But common fixing stuff methods never seemed to work with it. I remember once the screen just wouldnt work, so i unplugged the whole thing, put on my air conditioner full blast.

came back to the house, yelled at it. used some physical intimidation. had a 4 hour standoff, negotiated a deal for it to leave the country, and it finally released the hostages.

Anyways, i dont know what this has to do with your problem. but its an interesting story, and dont give up on that old babe of a comp. remember the good times...

I tried these kind of things as well...

Once, exhausted by so many diplomatic failures with that (beloved anyway) machine of mine, I went into my room with a hammer and some big nails, decided to end this once and for all. I was ready to perform some old school torture on the tower when suddenly the screen displayed what proven to be a quite efficient threat.

" I HAVE YOUR HARD DRIVE :P"

Back to diplomacy again...

Most likely the old Aureal drivers are conflicting with the newer version of DirectX. Well, either that or your system is totaly FUBAR'd. The only solution would be to reinstall windows (The only simple way of downgrading your version of DirectX) and installing a lower version, that your drivers do officially support. I believe that 3Dfx users are feeling the same problems, but they at least have some unofficial driver group or something.

Either that, or buy a new soundcard.

Use DirectSound...both A3D and EAX do not seem to work properly in FreeSpace 2 (never did work properly for me).

Download and install latest:
-FS2 patch
-Video card drivers
-Sound card drivers (any third-party drivers for Aureal?)
-Motherboard chipset drivers
-WindowsUpdate

If that does not help. Save the downloaded stuff on another partition or CD if possible. Then format your HD and reinstall Windows. That should make it a happy sod for a while if you play along.
