TBP Troubleshooting

I've been having some problems with TBP.
When I loaded a mission my computer completely locked up on the loading screen (the one with the pic of the agrippa). After a LOT of searching I found the cause to be the background images that came with TBP. When I replaced the star.tbl with the one that came with freespace the game worked fine. Why is this and how can I fix it?

Do you by chance have an old 3DFX card? Thats one possible problem. Another is a corrupted download on one of the effects (although lock ups usually occur when you try and look at one in the mission - not during load).

FreeSpace 2 RARELY locks up. More often then not it just drops to desktop or a debug message comes up. It may be a hardware problem, or a problem between hardware and FreeSpace 2. Its probably not TBP specific and if it is, its because of an external factor.

Without any more information on what downloads of TBP you have installed, what version of FS2 you've patched to and what your hardware and OS is it'll be hard to figure it out.

Hey, thanks for the speedy reply

My graphics card is a hercules prophet mkII with a geforce 2 chipset, not 3Dfx. It has all the latest drivers and I've had no trouble with it for other games, old or new

My OS is windows 98 SE

I normally play with the DTP beta 0.1 exe files, but I experience exactly the same problem with the default freespace exes, even patched to the latest version.

I've got all the tbp downloads installed (R1 and 1.1 patch,+hires and music)

And another thing I've noticed: its not just tbp that experiences this problem, but ANY mod that changes the default nebula backgrounds.

Hope this helps

Any 3DFX card is old...in computer terms, old is one year or more

Prophet is a pretty good card if I remember correctly. I got a very similar ASUS card in my rig. I'm really not sure what to say. You in 32bit or 16bit mode? Does that have an effect?

all i can suggest is a fresh install of freespace 2 and the mod, also create a new pilot entry.

install the mod in this order

core1.0
highres1.0
core1.1
highres1.1

music and animations at any stage, doesnt matter.

Hmmm I've never had any problems with FS2 or the tbp mod even before I joined the team and I have a GF2 card.Perhaps for some unforseen reason your star.tbl has gone beyond the set limit or the file did not install properly,do what Cpt White says and try a fresh reinstall and see if that fixes the problem.
