Freespace Port V2 with voices and videos:

Hello, guys.

I wanted to clear some doubts about putting the voice in the Port 2 file:

So, I followed the instructions on the readme file; here are them for quick reference:

quote:
If you own Freespace and/or Silent Threat, you're in for a treat! You can extract all the necessary files from the previous games and play the Port with full voice acting and command briefing animations. You will need Descent Manager's VPVIEW32 to extract the files. (http://www.descent-network.com/cgi-bin/descman.cgi?module=vpview)
Copy and/or extract these files:

- FS2\data\cbanim.vp (from the FS1 CD) Freespace command briefing animations.

- FS2\data\interface\cb_*.ani (extracted from the ST MDISK.VP) Silent Threat command briefing animations.

- FS2\data\movies\*.mve (from both FS1 CDs) Freespace cutscenes.

- FS2\data\voice\briefing (from voc.vp and mdisk.vp) Briefing voice.

- FS2\data\voice\command_briefings (from freespace.vp and mdisk.vp) Command briefing voice.

-FS2\data\voice\debriefing (from voc.vp and mdisk.vp) Debriefing voice.

-FS2\data\voice\special (from freespace.vp and mdisk.vp) In-mission message voice.

I followed the instructions the best I could, and so far it seens to have worked wonderfully... but as I don't have much time for testing, and I wanted to make a CD ready with the files so all I have to do when I want to re-install it is copy the CD's contents in my FS2 main folder, I want to clear some doubts.

So, what I want to make sure is:

1- About the "cbanim.vp" file: should I copy that very file in the folder, or should I extract it? I ask this because the text gives me the impression that I should copy the file, but all others vp files were dealt with extractions of it's contents.

Also, if i have only to copy the file, not extract it's contents, should I copy it from CD1, CD2 or it's just the same? I say this because you can't put both in the same directory (they have exactly the same name, after all), and the instructions says nothing about renaming...

2 - About the movies: In their case, I don't have to use the VPVIEW32, but just copy them in the directory, right? If that is the case, than, why, when I started the main FS1 tour, I didn't see the introduction? Will the other videos play normally when it's their time?

If the problem is only with the introduction, is there anyway I can view it, or keeping the file on my HD will be only waste of space?

3 - Silent Threat Voices: when extracting some voices from the ST mdisk.vp file, I was asked if I wanted to overwrite some files with the same name (in the debriefing files if I'm not mistaken). My question is, were them the exact same voices as the ones from the main tour, just repeated in the ST tour?

I haven't overwrited them, thinking that it probably wouldn't make any difference, that the ST cd simply had some voices that were the same from the original... but anyway, I wanted to make sure.

Thanks in advance for anyone who take the time to read and answer this.

Regards .

edit: only spelling and clearing up some of the questions.

Hehehehe... I've seen now that the game has replaced the FS2 intro with the FS1 intro.

So, I want to make a small sdjustment to my original question...

Was it copied over the FS2 intro file, or is it still in my HD (I don't remenber it asking me if I wanted to overwrite anything in that moment...)? And what should I do if I want the game to show the FS2 intro? Just erase the FS1 intro file?

Or something else?

Regards

One more addition to my question. I reached what should have being the first in-game movie (the one that has a monologue saying "ours is a proud people...", just before the mission "out of the dark, into the night").

It didn't work. All I got was a still image of the first image of the movie, and the written text.

As I already described how I dealt with the files, I ask what I did wrong (looks like my worries about the video were all reversed :rolleyes.

Oh, by the way, what I asked in my first post (about how to get back the FS2 intro), I ask also about the ending movie (assuming that it were also replaced by the procedure).

regards .

It wasn`t copied over the original file as the original lives in the relevent .vp file (see my FAQ for further details). You can simply rename the intro file to get the FS2 one back.

I can`t remember if the FS1 end movie uses the same name as the FS2 one but I don`t remember them using the same name so you should be okay.

Hi. I made the Port. Worship me.

Cutscenes are tricky. The Ancients cutscenes were NOT included in the Port, and neither was the Lucifer exploding, because they were done as command briefings. This is so people without the cutscenes installed can still get the whole Ancients monologues and grasp the cosmic significance of the story. Sorry...

Yo GalacticEmperor,

I noticed that you missed out some words on the Monologues.

I accually have all the words commited to memory. lol. (yes i am sad) lol

Well, not exactly commited to memory, i know them when i play the movies, but not when i want to type them out. (you know what i mean?)

Other then missing a few words, i am VERY impressed with the FS-Port v2

Dude, you ARE worth worshiping .

Well, I asked the question because the readme gave me the impression that I could see the videos if I copied all of them in the folder.

Is there any plan of making another version of the port, being pretty much the same but with the cutscenes and the ending video? As I don't know programing language, I don't really know if it's a big deal, but I tend to thnk that probably the hardest part of the job is already done.

A few more questions, if you don't mind. Is there anyway I can see those videos outside freespace? Some other program or something that can play them?

Also, when I have the port installed, my account on PXO says that I have a warez copy. How can I prevent it? Do I have to disable the port so I can play online?

Thanks

Okay to play on PXO rename your data drawer to Data-FS1Port or something similar and then make a new drawer with the name Data. Copy (don`t just move) your Data-FS1Port/players drawer over into the new drawer. PXO should start working again. Have a look at my FAQ before you next install a mod to see why you should always make a new data drawer each time.

FS2 uses interplays proprietary MVE format. Interplay defend the format vigourously but if you search the web hard you could probably find a copy of an (illegal) program designed to play it.

Changing the campaign file to put the movies back in is very simple. It would probably only take 5 minutes in FRED2. Getting the file out of the .vp may prove a little harder for you since I doubt you have a copy of vpview installed (details on where to find it are in my FAQ if you wish to try).

Thanks, karajorma, I'll try it.

I never really messed with FREDs, so I guess I'll have to work a little on it.

And I actually DO have a version of vpview installed... I had to use it when I inserted the voice files in the port.

Anyway, your ready answers everytime I ask questions actually convinced me read your FAQ. I'll probably do it tomorrow.

Thanks, pal.

Regards .
