Unhappy Need help

About two weaks ago I bought the old mainboard, cpu and rams from a friend. Since then I can't play FS2 anymore, the game runs very slow (even in the briefing) and crashes very often when a mission starts. Also the screen becomces often black for a moment. I really don't know why, FS2 worked fine on my old PC but now it is absolutly unplayable. I don't have problems like this with any other game.

My PC:

K7T Pro2-A Mainboard
Athlon 900 TB
256 MB SD 133 Rams
Geforce 1
SB Live 5.1

Hmh, so did you replaced your motherboard without reinstalling existing windows? That may be the problem.
Windows can get real weird if motherboard is changed, or so I have heard.

I doubt it's the motherboard-windows conflict issue, since all other games are working, right?

But anyway, I suggest you uninstall your FS2, delete the FreeSpace 2 folder and all remaining files. But remember to backup any missions you have made, if any.

Then install FS2 and apply 1.2 patch.

While ns33 may favor Win2000 or WinXP over 98 or ME, not everyone have that luxury. (Whether the windows is legal or not.)

And GF1 is fine graphics adapter, it may be power hungry and easily get as hot as a supermodel, but you know, what the heck.

I have reinstalled my Windows (98) and only the mainboard the rams and the cpu are new. Every other component were in my old pc, too. Maybe it is the chipset driver ?

I've tried it out with FS Open 3.4, the game runs at normal speed but crashes after a few seconds with a blue screen. Has anyone an idea how I can uninstall the chipset drivers ? Everytime I uninstall them windows reinstall them after a restart without let me a choise to select a driver.

This could be a whole host of problems. My first thought is your graphics drivers. If you have the newest possible version, then they could be beta drivers and very buggy. I had this problem with my Radeon - I couldn't Freespace after I installed the new betas, so I put the old ones back.
If possible, search for some older, proven Detonator drivers (ones from the manufacturer if possible) and they should make it work.
Another problem could be the mainboard itself - my dad has a very unreliable mainboard using a K6 processor. Also, the BIOS may need flashing to the most recent version, which would speed up your PC and possibly make it more stable.
An other theory that that I have for your problems is overheating:

(Side note - how do I put the "by IceFire" bit before the quote)

If your graphics adapter is overheating (or any part of your PC, in fact, like the Athlon, which needs a colossal fan just to boot up), then that could cause glitches.
Finally, the problem could lie your PC not having enough power supplied to it - Athlons are notorious for their power consumption and if IceFire is anything to go by (which he probably is), then the GeForce is eating a lot of power, which would cause errors.
Other than this, I don't know. You have done all the things that I would have originally suggested to people in your situation, so this problem is a mystery to me.

I have the Geforce (I use the newest offical drivers, not beta)since 2000 and it's running fine, also every other game runs fine. I don't think that it is a power problem because, as I already said, I don't have problems with any other game. I really think it is the chipset driver, unfortunatly it can't be uninstalled as it seems. FS2 did work without any problems on my old PC but since I have the new motherboard it runs very slow with the normal freespace 1.20 and crashes after a few seconds mit FS Open 3.4 (at least I have a normal speed).

Thanks.

Anyway, perhaps it is possible to install newer (or older, if the new chipset drivers are buggy) over the top of the old ones. If you uninstall your chipset drivers, then your PC may run extremely slowly or not at all, as Windows makes calls to chipset functions in every operation.
Did you install the manufacturers chipset drivers after you stuck the new motherboard in? If not, then you are probably using the Windoze default ones, which could be very buggy.

This might not be the problem, as your other games run fine. I definetly think that it is a FS-specific problem. Try it with software mode and all colour depths/resolutions in Direct3D and see if that has any effect.

It's odd how it crashes with the open source FS2 and runs slowly with the release version. The open source version should spew out a log file (I don't know what the file is called), which may give you a clue about the problem. If you have FS1, then see if the problems happen with that.

Also, did FS2 install correctly?. Some exes or dlls could be bashed up and causing you problems. check your CD for damage. I know of a good program, called CD-R Diagnostic (made by Arrowkey) that will scan CDs for bad sectors. Go here to get it. It is only an evaluation version, but it will tell you if your discs are damaged.

Finally, have you tried FS2 with and without the patch? It is a long shot, but it might work.

If it's a Via chipset, then run the driver installation program again and it will give you an uninstall option.
