crashing locking RF/RED

this has been going on for a long time and I've tryed to fix it, but RF crashes in a very ugly manner when ever I try to use the chat and on semi-rare random moments in gameplay.

If I try to use RED I lock hard right as it should start rendering the default sceen, I'm only able to get back by holding the power button down, I'd realy like to get back into mapping but the locking makes that somewhat dificult.

I have:
a S3 Savage 4 8mb (stop laughing!!)
win98 (realy stop)
dX8.1
P3 450mHz (didn't I tell you to stop laughing!!)

this has been hapening for months now and has consistantly pissed me off

The RED thing has to do with your desktop I know that much. Its very picky on what you have it set to including color depth...Though Im not entirely sure of what it likes as I dont use it

But I just opened RED with a 1024x768 res @ 32 bit color. Im not sure if size matters but im 99% sure color depth does

As for your other issue Ive heard of the same things and oddly enough with the exact same VC so I assume its a game glitch? Is it possible for code to age as the RF code is getting more holes by the day lately

Actually, I think thats backwards. IIRC, it's the resolution (1024x768) thats critical and not the colour depth...

no it's the color depth, I remember back when it would run, it ran in any resolution, but if I had 32bit color it would **** a brick, and it still does (I get an error mesage rather than hard lock).
this seems to be some sort of weird vid driver/DX problem, I think it happend after I updated my drivers and/or DX
