does it work on the Freespace 2 demo.

No it does not, you need a full version of FS2.

I know it's kinda hard to find such an old game but...
There's another choice howewer, try asking around in case if one of your friends has it.
If someone is willing to send a copy of FS2, please do such discussion by email or private messaging.

You'll have a hard time finding a copy of FS2 in stores, although you can purchase it at Amazon.com, and there are some copies currently on Ebay.
