Newbie requires help

Hya,
Just got Red Faction for PC.
Great game, really enjoying it, but I have now reached a point where I seem to be stuck forever
I have fought my way through the mines etc, and have reached the point where I have to shut down a generator.
I have killed all guards, and ended up on a sort of ledge. There is a large 3 bladed fan rotating just in front of my position.
I have made my way back down the ladders to a switch & pressed it. [ I thought this would stop the fan & allow me to walk across the blades to the other side, but it doesn't ]
I assume I have to reach the other side, but how do I get there?
I tried jumping onto the blade, thinking it would rotate and I could get off on the opposite ledge, but every time I try, I get knocked off.
Would be gratefull for advice.

Heh every1 seems 2 gets stuck there. Well its a long time since ive played Single player but i believe there is a button at the top if u keep going up the ladder (might be wrong thou ) When u stop the fan it takes a few trys 2 get it to go where u want

ya have to get from the side ya on to the side where there is no ladders or any thing.. tis farily easy to do

When you say get to the side with no ladders, is that the one where there is a sign saying rock crusher?
